Parents across the country are facing some of the same challenges in raising teenagers. One of the most significant challenges may involve the time allocation in your teen's use of the Internet. Because the Internet provides teenagers with a form of social networking, it has become a way to engage and socialize with other teenagers, often requiring more time that allocated in the past. For teenagers who live with a seizure disorder, the use of the Internet provides for a unique opportunity to learn about their condition and to connect with other teenagers who are living with the same neurological complication. If you find that your teen is spending countless hours on the Internet, you may want to give your teen a special project to work on in terms of the seizure disorder.
Creating a seizure preparedness plan is a unique way in which your teen can begin to take control of their health complication and use the Internet in a constructive and entertaining manner. Begin by listing all individuals who may need to be aware of your teen's health condition, including school officials, parents of your teen's friends, relatives, church members and even anyone involved in your teen's recreational activities.
Once the list of individuals is made, ask your teen to create a document that lists the important information about their health condition, including their vital statistics, the medications required to be taken, and what to do in the event a seizure occurs while in their presence. With the creation of this one-page document, your teen may want to connect with other teenagers who have neurological complications and survey them about the information that might need to be included.
After creating the document, you and your teen can work together to email the information to the important individuals on your list of contacts. With the email, provide the document about your teen's specific health complications and then ask your teenager to include links and resources within the email of informative sites found on the Web.
