One of my least favorite shows is American Idol. I believe that after the first season, the show has pretty much gone downhill. I am not saying that there hasn't been some remarkable talent to come through the show. Oh no, it is quite the opposite. I have admired and enjoyed listening to the talents of Carrie, Rubin, Clay, Fantasia, Melinda, Jennifer and many more. And, although now I really don't like the show, I can't help but to watch it when it comes on, and I can't quite put my finger on why. I think I've narrowed my dislike to two primary reasons. The first is that the auditions are now the biggest joke on television. During the first season, I believe that most of the bad auditions were truly authentic. I think that those folks probably really truly believed that they could sing and they had no idea that they would be exploited for laughs and ratings to gain the interest of the viewing audience. I would even go so far as to say that most of the auditions during the second season were also genuine. However, after season two, people began to do stuff just to get on television. Have you seen these people this season? There was a guy dressed up like genie who the judges convinced to get his chest waxed before continuing and even some nut who did an imitation of Katt Williams before and after he sung (loosely defined).
Then there was the guy who song the stalker song to Paula Abdul. Even I was "creeped out" by this guy and he had to be escorted from the room. There were a couple of people who probably actually thought that they could sing only to find out the hard way and in the wrong place that they couldn't. One that comes to mind is the poor guy who tried to sing "Let My People Go". I don't know, but I think that there was something seriously wrong with that poor fellow. Genuine failures from legitimate attempts I can stomach, but obvious attempts to get onto television should be banned. They just aren't that funny.
