NBA Trading Deadline: Do the Detroit Pistons Need to Make Move to Beat the Boston Celtics?
Joe Dumars has done a fine job as general manager for the Pistons, but it seems like fans are a bit disappointed in the fact that Detroit has only won one championship with their current core.
The Pistons have a lot invested in their big 4 of Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and Rasheed Wallace and trading any one of them is a big risk for Dumars to
make.
Since the starters have been set in stone for some time, Dumars has focused on developing his bench. So far the youngsters like PF Jason Maxiell and Rodney Stuckey have shown the ability to be impact players, while SG Arron Afflalo is a great defender who will help D up the likes of Ray Allen and LeBron James (as best he can) in the playoffs and PF Amir Johnson has been great on defense.
But Detroit could still use a true backup point guard so Stuckey can shift to the SG full-time and a big man who can clear the glass and get the tough rebounds. Joe Dumars has some assets to dangle in a trade and has not been shy about trading future first-round picks in the past, so dealing a pick and someone like Ronald "Flip" Murray, a shooting guard who has some talent but has been chained to the bench, is a possibility.
The Pistons have Lindsey Hunter off the bench at the point guard spot to play great defense but is too streaky to count on for offense. While the Pistons don't want to give up on any of their young players too early, a trade would make sense for this year to get someone a little more dependable for the playoffs since the championship window won't be open forever.
A good trade idea would be to get one Seattle's many power forwards such as Chris Wilcox or Nick Collison in a trade for a first-round and Murray or someone else. Jason Maxiell is a pretty good young player but is an undersized power forward and Detroit could use someone bigger so don't rule out Dumars dealing him.
