How to Purchase a Quality Hummingbird Feeder

Hummingbird feeders are a great way to attract beautiful hummers to your yard. Hummingbirds are really a great “pet” because they are dirt cheap to have and require virtually no care! The feeders are very beautiful and easy to use, which makes owning them lovely.

But, before you go to the store and purchase a hummingbird feeder, there’s a few things you should know.  When shopping for a feeder there's so many options: size, shape, color, spout, feed choice - what's really best?  In this article we will examine all the different
 options so you can get the best feeder for your buck. 

1. Plastic or Glass?  Do not ever purchase a plastic feeder. Most plastic feeders have seems due to the process in which they are made. Plastic hummingbird feeders can leak, rendering the feeder useless. In addition, plastic feeders are generally cheap in quality and lightweight. 

2. Do they Need "Food"? Never purchase “Hummingbird Feed”. This is the biggest waste of money ever! Read Recipe below. Hummingbirds go after glucose. Your recipe for it is every bit as good as a companies! 

3. How Long till They Arrive?  The hummingbirds will start arriving early in Spring so have your feeders out, supplies in order and be ready for them! If you place your feeders close to bright flowers, they will discover them faster. 

4. Do I take Down My Feeder in the Fall?  Many people make the mistake of taking their feeder down at the first signs of fall. You actually should keep your feeders up an running into the winter months. The migrating hummers will be glad to use them as well as those birds that are unable to make the long trip. 

5. How do I clean it?  Ready to clean the feeder? No need to purchase supplies, just use a bottlebrush and mild soap with water!

I spray the pole heavily with any good ant spray. MAKE SURE the feeder is in the house when you do this. It is usually about 3 weeks before the ants need another dose. I now only have trouble with the tiny bees that crawl in and drown. I put out small batches and change often
