Who doesn't admire Julia Roberts? She's got a mega-watt smile and she's gone from relative obscurity to absolute fame and hasn't let it go to her head. She also has managed to maintain a fairly private life in the midst of in your face media. Perhaps one of my favorite Julia Roberts moments happened recently when she went off on a camera crew for being explotive by showing up at her kid's school. She's wonderfully grounded. With that said, here is a look at what I consider her top five movies. 1) Runaway Bride

How many movies have Richard Gere and Julia Roberts done together? Perhaps too many, but they are a surefire combination, guaranteed to provide a blockbuster. In this movie, Julia Roberts plays a woman with severe commitment issues. She simply cannot make it to the altar. She will hitch a ride on a motorcycle, a horse, or even a Fedex truck simply to avoid tying the knot. Of course she manages to overcome this fear and eventually weds Richard Gere's character.

2) Erin Brockovich.

She won an Oscar for this role. Based on a true story, Julia Roberts plays the titular role of Erin Brockovich, a lower class, in your face, stubborn as all hell kind of girl. Fortunately for her character, that stubbornness and her ability to identify with her employers clients results in one of the biggest class action victories in the U.S. It's a must see.

3) My Best Friends Wedding

Ok... so this movie is not actually all that good. But if you really want to be entertained and see a normally perky Cameron Diaz lose it, this is the right choice. It's also entertaining to see just how far her character will go to break up her best friend and his fiancé and just how badly most of the attempts backfire on her.

4) Steel Magnolias.

Takeaways
  • If you want to cry, watch Steel Magnolias.
  • If you simply want entertainment, consider My Best Friends Wedding or Runaway Bride.
  • If you want a look at the complexities and intensity of relationship, watch the underrated Closer.
