As of Sunday evening February 10, 2008, it has been reported that well known "Jaws" star Roy Scheider has died at the age of 75. Schieder was a resident of Sag Harbor, New York.

Roy Scheider is best remembered for his role as the police chief and life saver in the first Hollywood blockbuster movie "Jaws."

So far, no cause of death has been released, but Roy Scheider is said to have passed at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, Sunday afternoon.

Hospital spokesman David Robinson would not discuss the cause of death, but confirmed that Roy Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy throughout the past two years.

The Democratic Underground.com reports that Scheider's wife said he died from a staph infection.

Scheider is best known for his role in "Jaws," but has a long history on stage and in films. In his later years he returned to stage, and as a resident of Sag Harbor he continued to lend his voice talents to documentaries and appear in films.

Scheider was an active anti-war activist and participated in a New York demonstration of 125,000 activists in March, 2003. With Cathy Engle he established the Hayground School in Bridgehampton which promoted a creative, innovative, and diverse learning environment for kids. Scheider continued to remain active and involved in a variety of projects up to his death.

Scheider is survived by his wife Brenda Seimer; three children, Christian Verrier Scheider and Molly Mae Scheider, with Ms. Seimer, and Maximillia Connelly Lord, from an earlier marriage, to Cynthia Bebout; a brother, Glenn Scheider of Summit, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

Darn! Great reporting, Lenora, thanks for sharing this. You broke the story to me first. :-) I will always remember holding my feet up, in the movie theater, while watching Jaws...lol. I loved Roy Scheider's acting and he certainly played his Jaws roles well.
