When preparing this, I sourced The Mayo Clinic to determine what the medical field thinks about tea tree oils.

The Mayo Clinic does recognize that tea tree oil is known for its healing properties, however, state "that further research is needed to confirm these results. Tea tree oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia". The tea tree is a plant that is native to Australia. Tea tree oil is known to unblock the follicles of the hair. Blocked hair follicles can result in thinning of the hair or in hair loss. Wives tales claim that tea tree oil mixed 1 part tea tree oil to 10 parts olive oil will get rid of cradle cap. I can vouch for that one. In researching for this article, I read that tea tree oil also will get rid of head lice, dermatitis, corns and athlete's foot. It is recommended by the Mayo Clinic, that women who are breast-feeding do not use tea tree oil. A direct quote from the Mayo Clinic web site states "Tea tree oil should be avoided orally, as reports of toxicity after oral ingestion have been published. When used topically, tea tree oil is reported to be mildly irritating, and has been associated with the development of allergic contact dermatitis, which may limit its potential as a topical agent for some patients."

After reading all of the pros and cons, and my own experience with tea tree oil, I think that each person should perform a skin test to make sure they are not sensitive to tea tree oil. I have had tremendous luck with tea tree oils and have used them on many family members with no bad experiences. I do realize though that every person is not the same. Tea tree oil has repaired my hair, which was damaged by color, chlorine and sun. It is now healthy, shiny and full again.
