There are plenty of ways you can start a conversation with someone you come across in an airplane or the airport. These can be categorized into some broad topics:

1...The usual get to know you stuff.

The 'what do you do?' and 'how many children do you have?' or 'where do you stay?' kind of things are a time tested formula in starting a conversation though many would discount their importance.

2...Give information that may help

A lot of people would be traveling for the first time or that they would be from those who travel rarely and others would be in need of gathering some beneficial information with regards to their journey. This is especially the case of women. Also , most of them are going or coming from a place they are new to.

So, things like - 'do you know that accommodation is cheap in so and so area in that city?' or 'the weather there is so cold these days? You should have some warm clothes ready at hand'- do help in breaking that ice. Look for who one who does not seem to be at ease and is worried or even frowning and you
know what you have to talk to about.

3...If the person seems to be of the intellectual kind then news is it.

The people who are seemingly intellectual or the scholar type bespectacled or otherwise would like to talk about something that is not trivial but which is a significant event or fact. It may be from history or from the recent news and could be of any field like science and technology or politics or anything else.

'who do you think will win the 2008 elections?'

4...Simply share your emotion.

This works well especially with women because they are more emotionally sensitive than men.
'This person sitting there reminds me of my school teacher' or 'that kid talking loud there is just like my small child'. There is no end to the possibilities here because human emotions could be attached to just about anything from people to the lighting or the seating around to the color of the flooring, but beware only genuine emotions can strike a chord and women can usually make out quite easily the genuine from the fake.

5...Most people are innately religious.
