Don't get me wrong. I am the biggest hopeless romantic my poor husband could have ever married. After all, my top 20 favorite Valentine's Day movies in which the guy gets the girl are Pride and Prejudice, Sweet Home Alabama, The Wedding Date, Sabrina, Ever After, French Kiss, While You Were Sleeping, Grease, Two Weeks Notice, Pretty Woman, The Wedding Planner, The Cutting Edge, You've Got Mail, Medicine Man, Life or Something Like It, Someone Like You, Sound of Music, A Walk in the Clouds, Indecent Proposal, and When Harry Met Sally. If there were more than 24 hours available on Valentine's Day to watch 20 more sappy, romantic chic flicks, I could give you that list, too.

My poor husband also has to listen to all those best love songs by Bread, Air Supply, Styx, ABBA, and The Righteous Brothers. I didn't even mention my favorite Valentine's Day love songs by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Journey, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Loverboy, and Bon Jovi. If you love Bon Jovi, you can send Bon Jovi a Valentine's Day e-card from the official Bon Jovi web site. (Click here to send love.)

Don't Buy Me Cut Roses on Valentine's Day - They're Probably Imports

Honey, you are married to a hopeless romantic, but I am Anti-Valentine's Day, so do not stress over Valentine's Day. Do not spend twice the price on roses and fattening candy. In 2005, more than $1 billion was spent in the U.S. on cut flowers. 40% of that money was spent on roses of which 88% of cut roses were IMPORTED - a record amount! Let's go green for Earth Day and just buy me a rose bush to plant instead of imported cut roses.

I know about blood diamonds, so don't even buy the killing rocks for me any more. Honey, don't buy me a $6 Hallmark card at the last minute from a picked over selection of cards. I would rather have a handmade card with a picture of you and I on it - reminding me how lucky we really are to have each other. I will hang it by my computer for all time.

Takeaways
  • Most roses in the U.S. are imported.
  • You can go green on Valentine's Day and grow your own roses for half the price of cut roses.
  • You don't have to be anti-love to be Anti-Valentine's Day.

I think your article was well-intentioned and sweet but what's the point of not buying imported roses and "going green" if you're going to spread rose petals on the floor on April 12th? Where do you think the petals come from? And going green doesn't really include having your BBQ "air shipped" to your door.

Good advice, but I don't see any reason in here to be Anti-Valentine's Day. What I see are reasons to be anti-cut-roses, and, more importantly, to show the same kind of special attention to your someone year round.

My hubby always gets me roses even though I tell him not too. What's the point, they die within a few days anyways. I loved this article and have never tried having sex in a canoe(should I put this on my to-do list)

Great article, very romantic *sniff* I thought I was allergic to long-stemmed roses until my sister took a floral design class and learned that most long-stemmed roses don't actually have much scent. Florists have to spray them with perfume to get that heady fragrance. Now I just have to find someone to buy me some... ;)

Great article and I agree 100%. I don't like Hallmark anyway as they ripped me off for a design I sent them once. They are know for doing that to artist. who submit to them. Love the canoe idea
