Most people are familiar with the twelve modern birthstones, or at least the one associated with the month in which they were born. But birthstones have a long and varied history; one which we may not be so familiar with today. Over time, there have been several influences on how certain stones are associated, and this has resulted in several varying lists of the symbolism of gemstones.

Throughout history, people have appreciated the beauty of precious stones, and often associated magical or healing powers with them. Though there are many different interpretations of the symbolism of gemstones, the tradition of birthstones is widely thought to have originated with the Breastplate of Aaron, a ceremonial religious garment described in the book of Exodus which was set with twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. These twelve stones also corresponded with the zodiacs and with the months of the year.

The custom of wearing birthstones is thought by most scholars to have become popular in Poland in the fifteenth or sixteenth century. At this time, people were thought to have worn all the birthstones, because the gem's powers peaked during it's month. In contrast, today most people only wear their own birthstone, or simply choose a gem they like based on its color.

Because classification of gemstones has changed over time, there is some debate about which gemstones were included in the Breastplate of Aaron. This has resulted in the development of several lists of birthstones. Different cultures around the world have developed their own lists, while some associate birthstones with zodiac signs rather than months of the year Below, I have included a few of these different lists. Keep in mind that these are only a few of the lists in existence.
