In many car owners' eyes, the worst thing about going shopping is the constant threat of shopping cart damage that just seems to be inevitable. We've all seen the warnings on the shopping carts, and the disclaimers that seem to be everywhere around those parking lots. While it's true that some damage from shopping carts such as scratches and dents are unavoidable, there are steps that you can take to limit the amount of serious damage your car or truck could incur. The more insidious shopping carts are often those which are used in home stores. Not only are they nearly four times heavier than normal shopping carts, but they can also be low enough to the ground that they will roll under the chassis of your car, and leave only the handle exposed, which may not be seen until you've driven off, catching the cart with your tire. The best approach to deal with these types of shopping carts is to be proactive. Look for the high ground of the parking lot, and park there, so long as the parking lot is relatively level, the carts shouldn't be able to build up enough momentum to do any serious damage.
Most shopping carts that are loose and cause scratches and dents to your car in the parking lot are there because either the person who used it was too lazy to return it, or somebody didn't want to go too far from their car, possibly because a baby was just strapped in. The solution to this is simply to plan ahead. If you're going to use a shopping cart, pick a spot close to a cart corral. Not only will you have quick access to a cart, but you'll also be able to put it away quickly and without going too far from your car.
