While some people say that homeschooling is the only way to go, homeschooling is not for everyone. However, there are many good reasons to homeschool. Here are some of the most common reasons parents choose to homeschool.

1. Parents choose to homeschool for religious or philosophical reasons. Some people chose to homeschool because they are unhappy with the values presented in the public school setting. They may also want to have more time to teach their children about their religion and homeschooling provides them with more time to do so.

2. Parents choose to homeschool for academic reasons. Although many people would argue that homeschooling parents are not equipped to teach their children, research on the subject proves otherwise. Individual attention in homeschooling often provides a superior educational environment compared with what can be offered in large classrooms.

3. Parents choose to homeschool for health reasons. At times, children have health issues that may make it difficult or impossible for them to attend a public or private school. If a child has an illness that requires ongoing treatment which would result in missing a lot of school, parents may opt to homeschool. Parents of children who do not have a serious illness and yet are sickly and would miss a lot of school due to basic illnesses such as colds and coughs may also decide to homeschool to protect their child from picking up sicknesses from other children.

4. Parents choose to homeschool for financial reasons. While there is some cost associated with homeschooling, there is also cost associated with attending even public schools including the purchase of mandatory school supplies, new school clothes at the beginning of the year, school parties and other activities. And of course the costs of private schools are out of reach of most American families. Homeschooling parents have a great deal of control over how much they spend on homeschooling, and they also can choose when and how to spend the money.

Takeaways
  • Parents often choose to homeschool for religious reasons.
  • Parents often choose to homeschool for academic reasons.
  • Parents often choose to homeschool for financial reasons.

Great list of questions for those weighing the pros and cons of homeschooling. I'm not homeschooling, but the flexible schedule is most appealing to our family. Besides our weird day-to-day schedules, it would really be great to travel whenever we wanted and turn those trips into learning experiences.

Interesting. This is not really an option here in U?K. Technically it can be done but in effect they don't make it easy.

This is interesting. Two of my husband's nephews were homeschooled and I found them to be very well rounded, intellectual individuals. So I see nothing wrong with homeschooling if that is what parents choose. Sophie

great article. I had to finish my last two years of high through and online program and I enjoyed it very much. It allowed me to work two jobs to help my family and I got my diploma on time. It is just as challenging as regular high school, but I believe that it instills more discipline and motivation into children. I just subscribed to to on the "sunscriber for subscriber list" and look forward to reading more of your stuff!!!
