What a battle I've been fighting over the last three weeks since my elementary kids brought home head lice to the family.... what fun!! Between washing and washing and going to the laundromat, as well as applying preparation after preparation to my kids heads and feeling absolutely high from the poison of it all, I still come up with phone call after phone call from the school that they have found more live lice on the kids heads. How could this be time after time with the amount of toxin put on their heads?

Well, as I've found out from the school nurse... the lice have grown resistant to the pharmaceuticals and pesiticides that have been used on them for years and years, making them heartier than ever!! Great news for our family of 10 huh? Exhausting to say the very least. Well I was beginning to feel hopeless until I discovered and tried some alternative treatments on this problem. Finally some reprieve. I can't say enough about these options in their effectiveness in helping us to rid ourselves of this enormous problem. Not to mention the fact that they will not make you feel high while your applying them, nor are they toxic. In fact, I wish I'd have just used one of these treatments right off the bat instead of wasting time on all the poisons that are ineffective, as well as expensive. These alternatives include:

Olive Oil- This works by suffocating the little varmints. I used this first after all the poison and after the rinse and comb out, found that the lice I was finding were somewhat alive but barely moving. The survivors were certainly not going to make it, but I needed to kill them dead, just for my own sanity after such a long ordeal. On to plan B.

I've also heard that mineral oil and vinegar preparations work for lice. I used to work in a health unit as an undergrad nurse and we gave this mixture to pregnant women and children under 2 or 3 who had lice, because permethrin products (such as Nix) aren't safe in these cases. I also had a nursing instructor who said that when she was young, she had lice once and was treated with kerosene. NOT recommended any more!

I wish I'd known this when my daughter was little. She picked lice up from school. Unfortunately, her hair was long and baby fine. I tried everything to get them out. I ended up giving her a pixy haircut. It broke my heart.

Great article! This is sure to help people out. I wonder if my kids using hair moisturizers is why they have never gotten it when they were in daycare or school, even if others had it. I'm glad we use them if so. :-)

Great, informative article. Yeah, i remember when I was in school I never had the lice problem. I always had hair oil in my hair. My kids always have some sort of moisturizing gel. Hopefully, this will prevent an infestation. Yuck--lice in pinworms!
