With war and related human rights violations dominating the news, a summit at the United Nations on Friday, August 25 presented human rights education as a practical route to world peace. Celebrities, human rights heroes, and artists participated alongside grassroots reformers from 40 countries around the world.

The summit was called to increase awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a list of 30 articles declaring basic human rights for all people. The articles include basic rights many Americans take for granted, such as the right to food, shelter, and education, and the right to express one’s political views freely.

“Imagine how different this world would appear if member nations had implemented real human rights education from the late 1940s,” said Tim Bowles, Executive Director of Youth for Human Rights International, who opened the event in front of 500 attendees in Conference Room One at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

Youth for Human Rights International organized the event in cooperation with the Human Rights Department of the Church of Scientology International, the International Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance, and Artists for Human Rights.

Mr. Enzo Di Taranto, speaking on behalf of the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights, welcomed the group and described the central role of rights in the mission of the UN. Mr. Hans Janitschek, President of the UN Society of Writers, described the vital part artists play in bringing about reform and in implementing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Rev. John Carmichael, President of the Church of Scientology of New York, explained that his church takes to heart the words of its founder L. Ron Hubbard, “Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream.”

Greetings. I met Joseph Jay Yarsiah back in August 2006 at the Youth for Human Rights Intenational conference, held at the United Nations. After continuing communications with him and developing a friendship, I visited him in Georgia in December 2006. During this time, Joseph and I met again and he raped me on December 30, 2006 in his mothers bedroom in her apartment. For a "man" who advocates and promotes Human Rights, he not only stole mine but crushed a young woman's hopes and dream, demolishing her spirit. The night he raped me...changed my life in the worst way. I am angry at myself for not pressing charges but there is no statute of limitations on rape and although a year later, I feel I will be pressing charges that he may never be able to enter my country (United States) and rape another woman. I have all correspondance from the time he raped me until the time I found out I was pregnant and he didnt want anything to do with the child nor did he want to take responsibilit

a year later i am still effected..... a year later my scars have not healed and my wounds are wide open..... a year later.....i still cry...i still have pain...i still cant breathe..... a year later you are prospering... a year later you have forgotten... a year later.....you moved on...you have no pain...you still breathe...you are still free one day your time will come one day you will repay what you once took away one day your debt will be due and when it is.....i will be prospering, moved on, breathing and living.....but i will never be free of pain nor hurt nor will i ever forget! some say i should destroy you some say i should demolish you some say i should take from you as you did me .....but that would make me just like you and i am better than.....but one day, your time will come to pay for your injustice that you fight so hard for. one day your human rights that you try and protect will be taken away from you and when that day comes.....whether now or in 50

Thanks for sharing this information. The PSAs speak to people of many cultures, and really bring home the idea that Human Rights begins with each one of us as individuals.

Great article! This is the type of article that should be on the front page of the New York Times. This is the type of news people really want to read and know about.

Excellent article! Very inspiring especially in a time when most of what we read in the media paints a "hopeless" picture. This article makes people see that change is possible and that it's up to us to make it happen.

With all the "bad news" we hear in the world & on the news, it wonderful & refreshing to know there are people doing something to change existing conditions. Thanks!
