Avapro is a newer drug used to combat high blood pressure. Accupril, one of the first drugs developed for high blood pressure is a part of a group of drugs called Angiotensin I. These were the preliminary findings of scientists on blood pressure. Avapro is part of a new group called Angiotensin II. Just like its predecessor in Accupril, Avapro blocks Angiotensin II, reducing the narrowing of the blood vessels. This narrowing is "high blood pressure" also known as "hypertension". It is this constriction that causes a spike in blood pressure. Unlike Accupril, Avapro tends to be prescribed alone, without the need for Hydrochlorithiazide. The drug itself comes is several strengths, the most common being 150mg and 300 mg. The doctor will start with the lower dosage and see which strength is right for you. As your high blood pressure begins to lower, the doctor might lower your dose (if you are using daily exercise and diet restrictions as part of your regiment with Avapro). It is important to note that Avapro has some great benefits to not only high blood pressure and hypertension. Those who suffer from Type 2 diabetes may notic a prescription for Avapro from their doctor. Avapro is used to slow down the progression of kidney damage due to diabetes, which in turn slows down the need for dialysis.
