There has been a lot of information distributed about the gluten and dairy free diet, especially by the families that have had success with it. However, while the potential for this diet is astounding, there is no guarantee that it will work for your family. If you are trying this diet and it doesn't seem to be working what can you do?

The Gluten and Dairy Free Diet

The gluten and dairy free diet is a simple diet in theory. You simply eliminate casein, a dairy compound, and gluten, a derivative of certain grains like wheat and barley. These two ingredients are removed from a diet because the person has a hyper sensitivity to them. As a result, their body produces opiate-like chemicals in the brain that create symptoms such as a disconnection from the world, mood swings, communication problems, anxiety and phobias. This diet is often prescribed for patients with celiac disease and autism.

When the Diet Works

To be successful, this diet needs to be an all of nothing proposition, as even a small amount of gluten or casein can trigger the original symptoms. It usually takes about six weeks before the effects begin to appear. These effects include heightened alertness, easier communication, behavior improvements and a more stable mood. With these improvements, rehabilitation therapies, like speech and occupational therapy, can be implemented with higher success rates.
