Guantanamo Bay is recieving a lot of noteriety on many issues. The detainee camp in Cuba houses known, convicted terrorists awaiting their days in court. concerns have been raised about brutality to prisoners, religious issues, possible death sentences and conditions of camp life. Michael Moore in his epic documentary, 'Sicko' sailed a little flotilla a Americans into Guantanamo. This group was made up of Americans who could not recieve proper health care or who had inadequate health insurance in the US. Moore wanted to see what kind of care they would recieve in Cuba, one of the leading nations in health care. Several were 911 rescue workers and EMT that did not recieve benefits after the disaster because they were not 'on duty' when the attacks occured. Moore's little group not only recieved medical treatment, but top notch care at that.

Recently, Atlantic Monthly photographer Louis Palu returned from Guantanamo Bay Camp where he had toured the facilities, talked with inmates and guards and made up a photo journal. The Atantic featured Palu's photos as well as comments by other journalists who visited Guantanamo. Palu says that prisoners are in cells, but not barred doors. They can walk about freely. Islamic detainees were issued copies of the Quran (or Koran as Americans spell it), the Muslim holy book, by camp offiicials. Several inmates have gone on hunger strikes to protest. They are then put on feeding tubes. You can view Palu's photo expose and read his discussion and that of other journalists who visited at the Atlantic website.

This is an excerpt based on one of the more memorable photos taken:

Takeaways
  • Guantanamo Bay
  • more on Islam
  • Strictures on the use of the Quran
Did You Know?
Just as Americans honor our flag and do not let it touch the ground, so Islamics honor the Quran and do not allow in to touch the floor. Even written quotations from the Quran must not touch the ground.
