Is a College Education Worth It?

My husband was watching a recent discussion on Fox News which debated whether a college education was worth it from a financial standpoint. I know that the price of a college education has been rising about 10% a year, which is double the rate of inflation and faster than wages have been climbing. According to the interview one of the reasons citied for the rise in cost is pure profit on the part of college (I guess it is financially worth it to them). Basically the colleges have learned that students and their parents are willing to take on more and more debt to pay for college. So, the more debt they are willing to take on the more they will charge.Things change and what was once a given may no longer be so perhaps it is time to re-evaluate what a college education is worth. In this day with the illegal immigrants and outsourced labor, and shorter corporate life spans, is the price still worth it?
My opinion, is that unless you desire to enter a very specific career that requires a college degree then the answer is “no.” If you are seeking to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher or a specific career that requires a certain amount of education then you will be forced to go through the four years of college to pay for your degree to enter your chosen profession. And this is basically what it amounts to with all of the odd ball electives and filler courses you are forced to take in order to get that degree versus only taking subjects that have to do with your profession.
