Today the families of former WWE pro wrestler Chris Benoit and his wife Nancy filed a lawsuit against Chris Benoit's former employee, the WWE, for wrongful death charges.

Chris Benoit made the national news last June when Chris, his wife Nancy and his son Daniel were found dead in their home in Fayetteville, Georgia. It was later revealed that Chris Benoit killed his wife Nancy, his son Daniel and then hanged himself.

At the time the steroid and HGH abuse in Major League Baseball was another big story in the news. The news decided to also turn Chris Benoit's story into a drug story and carelessly reported on topics that the knew nothing about. A lot of news reporters came to the conclusion that Chris Benoit was on steroids and that the death of his wife and son was a case of roid rage.

Chris Benoit had been using performance enhancing drugs, as many pro wrestlers clearly do, but later the truth came out although not many people reported it because they were happy with their false reports of it being a drug story.

Chris Nowinski, another former WWE wrestler, had to retire from wrestling because of concussions but went on to study concussions and the affects it has on the brain. Chris Nowinski has gone on to be a groundbreaker in the field of sports-related concussion trauma and Chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Chris Nowinski performed tests on Chris Benoit's brain and and the tests revealed that Benoit suffered from acute Chronic traumatic encephalopathy and had brain damage in all four lobes. Nowinski reported that Chris Benoit's brain resembled the brain of an 85 year-old Alzheimer's patient.

It seems that Chris Benoit's real problem wasn't performance enhancing drugs but was actually damage to his brain. Damage that occurred due to Chris Benoit's 22 year pro wrestling career. The families of Chris and Nancy Benoit are arguing that Chris Benoit would not have acted the way he did if it wasn't for his strenuous pro wrestling career.

I always thought his signature move would one day give him severe brain damage, and there's clear proof of a assumption I wish I'd never made.

Every former wrestler could file a similar suit if they performed high risk moves like Chris did.

awww that is such a shame.. i don't watch wrestling... but have worked with plenty of Alzheimer's patients at the nursing home, sweet one minute and mean as heck the next. yes I have gotten a sprained wrist from one retired preacher simply cuz i wore a Halloween scrub top.. he thought i was the devil and twist it high behind me very quickly, I had to be rescued. he was so strong... so I can understand the strength and extreme hatred they have... and for someone as young as this wrestler to have that kind of brain.. it is a wonder more people were not hurt... this is plain awful thanks for sharing

Excellent article! I'm not sure if I think they are responsible. I'd have to ponder that some more, but I do think they should definitely do something to prevent any future tragedies.

Excellent article Lee! I disagree that the WWE is responsible, yet certainly they should address the issue. As usual, a great article.
