Radio, the word goes back in history. An Italian named Guglielmo Marconi was first to develop commercial two way radio communications when he sent and received the first signal in 1895. Since that time Radio has branched out, and gone many different directions. When it comes to finding good on line resources for radio enthusiasts the first place to look would be http://www.wikipedia.org . Wikipedia can provide you with information about almost any type of radio communication you might be seeking.

The first use of radio was Wireless Telegraphy, basically a telegraph without wires. Morse Code was still the method of choice for communications. This type of message transmitting is pretty much relegated to the world of Amateur Radio. Ham operators all over the world still transmit CW (Morse Code) as it is the most reliable method that can get through when voice systems can't. To find out more about the world of Amateur Radio visit the Amateur Radio Relay League web site. http://www.arrl.org

Soon radio stations were established around the world, and across the country. AM stations sprang up in most large cities, and large floor model radios were marketed under names like Zenith, and Crosely. An excellent web site to find information about these old console radios is the Old Radio Zone . Many other web sites are out there as well, but this will give you some ideas. http://oldradiozone.com

Maybe your interested in talking between two locations, like with walkie talkies. Commercial communications of many types are available. Similar to the communications used by Police and Fire Emergency Vehicles, businesses use radios to communicate from one truck to another, or back to the office or shop. A good source of information about commercial communications would be Motorola 2-Way Radios . There are other brands available, but this is a start for you. http://motorola.com

  • From AM to XM, radio is everywhere
