Easy Halloween Costume for Baby

How to Make a Cute, Cuddly Bear Cub Halloween Costume

Choosing a Halloween costume can be just as much fun as trick-or-treating, especially for those of us who’ve exceeded the maximum height limit for that pastime. As an adult, I know the damage that eating candy can do to my waistline, so I delight
in dreaming up a Halloween costume for my son instead.

In 2005, the year my son was born, I decided that it didn’t matter that he preferred breast milk to candy; he needed a cute Halloween costume. The idea for his bear cub Halloween costume came to me when my mother brought him a headband with bear cub “ears” attached. Those ears would be the topper for my son’s first Halloween costume.

To complete the transformation from human infant to cute and cuddly bear cub, I needed only a few more items and a little ingenuity, so I headed to the store and put it all together. Now I’m going to share my Halloween costume idea and the steps for creating it with you.

If you want to make a bear cub Halloween costume for your baby, start by gathering the following items.

  • Brown or black one-piece bodysuit in your baby’s size—I lucked out and found a brown “onesie” at a resale shop. Black might be easier to find, especially around Halloween costume time. It’s OK if it has something printed on the front; you’re going to cover that up. However, if you can’t find anything suitable, simply take a white bodysuit and dye it brown or black with clothing dye, which you can find on most supermarkets’ laundry aisles.

  • Tights (brown or black to match the bodysuit)—I live in Texas, where it is still shorts weather on most Halloweens, so I didn’t dress my son in tights. But if you live in a colder climate, you should add some tights to this Halloween costume to keep your little one’s legs and feet a little warmer.
