Holes in your furniture? Damage to your house? You may think it is due to the woodworm; however, the woodworm is actually only the larvae of certain kinds of wood eating beetles. It is these beetles that cause the damage to your home and/or furniture. As you may already know, these beetles can cause a lot of damage. They are mostly seen in new construction because the woodworm larvae will take years before it produces a beetle. Once you have determined that you indeed do have a woodboring beetle infestation in your home, contact an entomologist. An entomologist can help you determine if the beetle is one that will cause damage to your home. Some woodboring beetles only cause damage to live timber therefore the timber that a home or furniture is made of will not be damaged. An exterminator most likely will not know the difference and you really do not want to spray pesticides in your home if it is not needed.

Once the entomologist has determined that you indeed have infestations there are generally three different ways that woodworm larvae and woodboring beetles can be eliminated. The first is by spot application with pesticides. Depending on the level of effectiveness of the pesticide, this job may require professional. The second method is freezing and only applies to furniture. It is only really applicable if you can live without a piece of furniture for a while. Essentially, the furniture is taken to a walk in freezer and left there for a few weeks. Any sub-freezing temperatures will kill the woodworm and beetles. The third method is through fumigation.
