Globalization, Information explosion, communication revolution - one heard all these expressions a decade or so ago and thought, ' well, its all good for the world!' One also heard that all this economic and technological breakthroughs would create spinoff benefits for the people of the world, by spawning a huge range of manufacturing and service industries! So good so far! However, I, and many others like me I'm sure, had no clue that we would one day see headlines reading " Britney economy thrives, no recession here", "Britney Inc -an Industry by itself!" Certainly, no one could have predicted this 'spinoff'!

I just do not know how we have arrived at this point where a mentally fragile and fragmented person who cannot, for the most part, hold on to the ground with her two feet, is holding up and sustaining an entire industry! It is bewildering that a drug addicted and disarranged persona has been converted into 'a product ', with its own manufacturing and retailing dynamics. Britney's story is a pathetic saga of a child-woman unable to manage her phenomenal success, and who, with each passing day, seems to be getting sucked into a mental and psychological vacuum, with little chance of redemption. Such a person needs to be left alone to cure herself, and not be merchandised by multitudes of predatory reporters and voyeuristic readers. She has allowed herself to be turned into a commodity, and has paid a huge price in terms of her dignity and self-respect, things which even an ordinary person is entitled to.

Coming to the social costs of the Britney 'factor', this is what I found reported the last time she was taken to hospital.
"... the motorcade that pulled away from Spears' residence was nearly the length of a football field. Along with the ambulance, it included police on nearly a dozen motorcycles and in two cruisers. Two police helicopters followed overhead".

"Britney Spears was taken from her home by ambulance... escorted to the hospital by more than a dozen police officers in cars, on motorcycles and in helicopters."

Takeaways
  • Today we have too much information on people and subjects that are genuinely unimportant.
  • Public resources spent on celeb security are obviously diverted from more important requirements.
  • Both the media-creators and the audience of such news become part of a senseless activity.
Did You Know?
"For a growing number of people and businesses," writes the Associated Press' Jeremy Herron, "Britney's saga is about money: Every time she sinks to new lows, cash flows. And these days, no one is above the fray."
