Amid a flurry of reports that Hezbollah militant, Imad Mughniyeh, was killed in a car bombing in Syria on Tuesday, the United States has openly welcomed his death. According to Yahoo! News, State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack, said about Mughniyeh's death that "the world is a better place without this man in it."

Personally, I can't believe anyone could openly welcome the death of another human being. Sure, we have our differences. Out of an ever-growing 6 billion and counting human population, there is going to arise substantial conflict and hatred between peoples spanning the globe. But is it right to "welcome" anyone's death? Isn't that one of the most arrogant statements a person could make?

Ok, it's important to remember that Mughniyeh was what any American would term as a "terrorist." He caused the United States and its allies a lot of grief, as he was constantly planning attacks against America. In 1985, Mughniyeh flew a TWA flight back and forth between Beirut and Algiers, demanding the release of Lebanese Shiites captured by Israel. But would have America acted any differently, had someone taken American hostages? No way, the United States would have bombed the hell out of anyone within miles of those responsible for such an act, and it would have been called "fearless patriotism." What was Mughniyeh supposed to do? Let the West and its allies walk all over his people?

What an appallingly misguided article.

Great article Adam! One of the best, most rational, least myopic of all the American writings on AC about Middle East.

First, America has not bombed anyone for taking our citizens as hostages (remember Iran in 1979?) We tend to let whoever has the oil walk all over us. You will probably hate me for this, but ya DAMN SKIPPY I'm glad he's dead, just like I'm glad Dahlmar, Bundy, and McVeigh are dead. No, I am not a Neo-Con, or "Super Patriot", nor do I rejoice in the killing of another human being, but the way I see it, if there is a madman in the mall killing people at random, and I'm there with my pistol, I'm gonna kill his sorry ass before he pops another innocent! I hope and PRAY to God that I never have to EVER take a life for any reason, but yeah, the world is a better place without people who get off on killin (and that includes killers like Bush and Cheney as well!). I appreciate your logic and reasoning, tho, but bad foreign policy doesn't justify killing folks who had nothing to do with those sorry policies.

Sorry, I gotta go with Donna on this one. While I would never presume to judge the man myself, I can't blame those that do. A lot of innocent people died because of him. That is hard to forget. But should we kill him? I think not but it isn't up to me.

I largely disagree but do appreciate the perspective and logic which is worth consideration.
