Turn Out the Lights...

With no real chance of winning the Republican
nomination, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has
announced his intention to stay in the race. One has
to wonder why he would choose to do so.

He has no legitimate shot at the
nomination. I mean, in fairness, if he were to win 90% of the
vote in every remaining contest, there is the outside
possibility that he could get it thrown into the convention and maybe win that way.
But how likely is it that Mike Huckabee will do that?
I suppose there was possibility
that the Patriots could have pulled out a win with one second to
go in the Super Bowl, but as we all know, that didn't
happen. Besides, Mitt Romney had a much better shot at
that and he dropped out.

Others put forth that Huckabee remains as a
conservative protest to McCain's apparent nomination.
This is a little more believable as many conservatives
apparently don't like McCain's supposed liberalism.
I, however, am a little confused as to how a pro-life,
pro-war, anti-gun control Senator
with a 60 to 80% conservative voting record can be
considered a liberal compared to either Clinton or
Obama.

Still, there is a third possibility that has yet to be
considered: maybe Mike Huckabee is just an egomaniac.

I've had a bad vibe about Huckabee ever since I saw
him in the South Carolina debates. His comment about
America's enemies meeting "the gates of hell" just
sounded rather contrived, like something a used car
salesman would say. I also didn't buy his "aw, shucks"
routine when it came to the Confederate flag either.
The comment he made about telling flag opponents
"where to put the pole" also came across more like a
guy trying to sell me a "previously owned" Honda Civic
than a man vying to be the most powerful man in the
world. It just didn't sound like something a preacher ought to say.

Maybe the issue is not so much Huckabee as it is me.
I am always suspicious when a "Man of God" turns "Man
of the People." Perhaps it is because politics is
such a dirty business. If Huckabee were truly
interested in reforming that business, I might feel
differently. But from all I've seen, he's just
another player in the game.
