I suddenly had to learn about Bloom's taxonomy for a job interview. So I applied the following technique to quickly memorize the three learning domains and the various levels in each domain for quick recall at the time of the interview. I learned this technique from Tony Buzan's books 'Use Your Memory' and 'Master Your Memory'.

According to Bloom's Taxonomy, there are 3 domains into which all our life-long learning can be classified. This classification is based on our three faculties - mind (Cognitive domain), emotions/attitude (Affective domain) and bodily control (Psycho-motor domain).

This much is fairly logical and easy to remember. What's difficult is to remember that there are 6 levels of learning in the Cognitive domain, 5 levels of learning in the Affective domain and 7 levels of learning in the Psycho-motor domain and what each of these levels are and to be able to recall them instantly for the rest of your life. To achieve this goal we need to use the Number Rhyme System to link each of the levels to their respective numbers, so that we can recall the levels in the correct sequence.

Let me first list them all down for your reference:

1. Cognitive domain:

1.1 Knowledge

1.2 Comprehension

1.3 Application

1.4 Analysis

1.5 Synthesis

1.6 Evaluation

2. Affective domain:

2.1 Receiving phenomena

2.2 Responding to phenomena

2.3 Valuing

2.4 Organization

2.5 Internalizing values

3. Psycho-motor domain:

3.1 Perception

3.2 Set

3.3 Guided response

3.4 Mechanism

3.5 Complex overt response

3.6 Adaptation

3.7 Origination

The explanations for each of these levels can be found in the original website from where I looked them up myself. The website is listed in the resources links for this article.

In this article, I'll focus on how to memorize this list and remember it for life.

You must first know the Number-Rhyme system which can be used to memorize short lists of items, upto a maximum of say, 10 items. Each number is associated with an object that rhymes with that number. I use the following set of objects for the numbers 1 to 10 under this system:

Takeaways
  • The 3 domains of learning are: Cognitive(mental), Affective(attitude) and Psycho-motor(physical).
  • The Number-Rhyme System can be used to memorize a list of ten items quickly and easily.
  • To remember for life, you must revise after 5 min, 1hr, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 6 months.
Did You Know?
Our mind remembers things by ASSOCIATION and through IMAGES. If we store the information in proper LOCATIONS in our minds, we can recall ANYTHING.
