Lately, for the past month or so, I've gone around saying things like, "I think the best religion for me is Wicca." Or, "The up-and-coming modern religion is Wicca." I've been dropping these lines in conversations to family and friends, interspersing them between other somewhat unrelated sentences. Each time, the reaction is the same. Some people turn their noses up at the word Wicca. Others will give a flat-out rebuttal of, "If you don't mind worshipping the devil." What infuriates me about this is that nobody is willing to change their negative viewpoint on this non-meddling, almost refreshing religion.

Why do people turn their noses up at the word Wicca? Why do they think they "know" those types of people, who delve into witchery? For one, the stigma against Wicca and witchcraft are not new. Ever heard of the Salem Witch Trials? The classical period for witch-hunts took place in Europe from between 1450 and 1700. Members of the society went out searching for individuals displaying witch-like qualities. These unfortunate candidates were put through torturous tests, and when they failed, they suffered the wrath of God, handed down by the people of the society. This is not unlike the McCarthy era, where "communists" were hunted down, due to their overly communistic behavior, and then prosecuted by the United States government, as made popular by Arthur Miller in his infamous play, "The Crucible."

The practice of casting spells, and what could be called sorcery, has been branded as evil for thousands of years. Even the Code of Hammurabi, from ancient Egypt, gives the order to put any man accused of placing a spell on another man into the holy river. If the river overtakes him, the other man acquires the dead man's house. If the holy river supports the man in question, then his accuser is to be put to death, and the innocent man acquires his house. The Hebrew Bible also openly condemns sorcery, calling it an "abomination" (Deuteronomy 18:11-12) and contains many phrases, such as the one found in Exodus, 22:18, "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

Adam, great article here on Wicca. You spoke to the idea that Wicca is considered a personal spirituality. Before becoming Wiccan (almost three years ago in December 2005), my wife and I were both Christians, searching for a deeper individual spiritual faith. After attending a local church for more than ten years, we developed many close friendships and fellowship with other Christians. But, were beginning to leave the service every week feeling less and less "refreshed" in the teachings of Christ and troubled with trying to apply them to our daily living. We began to take a hard look at our spirituality and researched Wicca. We still have many Christian friends, despite our different spiritual choices. We are blessed that our friendships have grown beyond religion. Like any faith, Wicca must be a personal choice, not forced upon or held over you, if it is to hold any true meaning and inspire you to make good life choices. For us, Wicca has brought us closer to Nature, closer

Adam, I really enjoyed reading your article! Retired from the military, I heard all sorts of obscure accusations...so I looked into it. Your article is very well presented & extremely interesting! You did a great job documenting the basics about the group & their beliefs. Thanks so much! KIM

Love your insight Shanika :) - I wanted to ellaborate on what white magic is; in all actuality white magic can be perceived as being worse then black magic as it is deceptive. There is no such a thing as 'good' magic. It is all backed up by the same spirits. Remember Lucifer is an angel of light.......

Well done. My only beef with Wiccans as vegans is that i believe that plants are just as ALIVE as any animal. Total hypocrisy, to me. I also think incense and candles are a little silly, but each to their own. Wicca is certainly less harmful than some of the other religions.

Thanks for helping to clear up these common misconceptions about Wicca. I am Christian myself, but have several Wiccan friends (NO-not ALL of us are Bible-beating witch-haters!). I once seriously thought about joining Wicca as well, but decided it wasn't for me (Not that I found "evil" in it or anything, "to each his own", I always say!) Seriously, tho, my Wiccan friends don't worship Satan or perform bloody sacrifices, and are genuinely good people. Clear something up for me, if you would, though: I don't believe in casting spells, because I view that as a form of subtle manipulation (esp. spells for romance, power, etc.). Some of my Wiccan friends view prayer the same way that I see spells. Do you see any difference between prayers and casting spells? (NOTE: I also don't believe in praying for "things", or for your team to win the super bowl, or the lottery, etc. I pray for intangibles, such as guidance, wisdom, and protection.) Thank you.

There is good and bad in every single religion. I think Wiccan and Witchcraft get intermixed. Most people associate witchcraft with something negative. But as I understand it, there are also good witches. Judging is something I try very hard not to do. After all, who am I to judge anyone? I'm far from perfect myself. I try to stick with those in my religion who think the same way because I just can't stand it when people preach about things they known nothing about.

I'll let people smarter than me debate it...my sister studied Wiccan for some years and decided not to commit ...(asked her to do a spell against a bad person but that is another story LOL) now she is unsure of her spirituality. But all I know is there is good people in most religions, "white and black witches" per sea nd pre-judging without knowledge is a mistake most religions suffer. I think we have to answer to our soul...and then some.
