Recent mom-to-be Christina Aguilera commented she had a C-section to prevent vaginal tearing, just like fellow singing sensation Britney Spears. She gave birth to her two boys through C-section also. Delivering by C-section is a popular choice for many celebrities, regardless if they require it or not. So what's the big fuss about vaginal tearing? Does giving birth literally tear your vagina open? What should you know about vaginal tearing before you get pregnant?

The Ugly, Ugly Truth
If you plan to have vaginal birth, be ready to face vaginal tearing. Your vagina does widen during birth, but your labia doesn't, resulting in a tear. Once the baby is expelled, the thin skin between your vagina and anus, the perineum, tears because of excess force. Tears are measured in degrees, 1st being non-serious and requiring no stitches. 4th degree tears are the worst, tearing from your vagina through your anus. As you can guess, that requires stitches and a lot of down time.

Don't worry, though, you usually won't tear! Why? Because a doctor will cut it open for you, called an epsiotomy. An epsiotomy is a precise, straight cut, done on your perineum. This gives more room for your baby. Some physicians limit episiotomies because they increase the chances of 4th degree vaginal tears. You know, the tear that goes from your vagina to your anus? It's very painful and takes months to heal.

This isn't the reason celebrities are foregoing vaginal birth, however.

Tummy Tucks are So Awesome!
This rumor has circulated the net since Victoria Beckham gave birth to her youngest child. Celebrities opt for C-sections so they can get an emergency tummy tuck also! Isn't that great? You can give birth, fix that stubborn belly fat you gained during pregnancy, and saunter out of the hospital looking better than ever. Sorry, Hollywood doesn't excuse fat -- even if it's pregnancy fat.

I rather have a vaginal delivery over a c-section anyday, of course a tummy tuck would be nice!

Excellent information! Vain celebrities fail to realize that a vaginal birth is almost always better for mom and baby, then a c-section.

I'm all about the kids, not so excited about the actual birthing part.

Actually, there are ways that you can avoid tearing even without perineal massage. I had a doctor tell me that the mothers she attends usually suffer very few tears because she uses tons of lubricant to stretch the perineal tissues during birth. Applying warm compresses to the perineum can also help.

very informative article! my mom had 5 kids the natural way (god bless her) i know that i wouldn't want to have a c-section unless it is absolutely necessary!! i think planned c-sections (for no specific medical reason) are kind of silly. but that's just me!

i think a voluntary c-section is crazy! Plus I don't agree with taking a baby early, my friend just recently had her doctor bring her to tears because she wanted to do a c section not long after inducing. She kept saying the baby was so huge- the baby was less than 7 pounds! I had a natural delivery and think I ripped a little because it happened too fast and there was no doctor or midwife to tell me when to pause. I have had no problems from it.

Great job on this! I had a C with both of mine--not by choice. The first was an emergency at 32 weeks. The second was because the doctor feared the first scarring would tear and I would lose the baby. Now, with the second, I tried to convince the doctor to give me a tummy tuck to no avail. Maybe my insurance wouldn't cover it. Perhaps it was because I'm not a rich and famous actor. Oh well, exercise and eating right work just as well.

I delivered all my children naturally. I think celebs can be silly. I had very little tearing with all of my kids. I think it's silly to have a surgery when you don't have too, but that's just me.

Well going with the natural birth, you may not have control over it. I for one am for natural if you can handle it. Crazy to think that you would make a mark on your body to take your baby out for the sake of tearing. It does heal itself.
