I happen to have a medical condition that wasn't even on the radar screen until fairly recently. Although some people call it metabolic syndrome, it is commonly known as PCOS, or polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Before this condition had a name, I just knew that the women in my family had a tendency to gain weight easily, have high cholesterol, excess fat around the hips and other signs of PCOS. Infertility, another indicator, was something I also went through.

Basically, PCOS is a sign of a hormonal imbalance and once it became well-known and was actually studied and considered a valid condition, I was referred to a specialist. After trying some other options, she put me on a medication called Metformin. I took 500 milligrams, three times a day. Metformin comes in both regular and extended release forms but I took the regular form.

Unfortunately, this is the form which has the highest risk of side effects - and oh, did I have side effects! Metformin's side effects started almost immediately and were pretty severe.

Metformin - side effects

For a list of possible side effects, you can check this page: www.pcos.insulitelabs.com/Metformin-and-PCOS.php but common side effects include diarrhea, gas, bloating, abdominal pain and other intestinal issues. My symptoms were so severe I could hardly leave the house, staying primarily in the bathroom. The pain was a cramping sensation, very intense, followed by major attacks of diarrhea. Sorry to be so graphic, but these were the facts.

There was a minor plus side to taking Metformin. I lost weight and my blood sugar levels were stable. That makes sense because Metformin is used to treat diabetes as well. Also, PCOS (my condition) can result in an increased risk of diabetes and is tied to insulin-resistance. Metformin may stabliize insulin levels. My cholesterol went down and my risk of heart disease might have been lower. Supposedly, women with PCOS are at increased risk of heart disease. I keep a close eye on that.

Metformin can be helpful to those with diabetes or PCOS but the side effects, unfortunately, can be pretty intense for some people. I was one of them.

i can really relate to the article. and i just wanna share my story. im 18 yrs old and a year ago the doctor found out through ultrsound that i have pcos. its really hard for me esp now that i can already feel the effects of it. like i have acnes, irregular menstruation (before), excess fats in the waist (im thin but i really have a big waist line. 32" to be exact. and people even thinks that im pregnant). as a teen, i really had a hard time dealing with it. i pity myself. last week my doctor prescribed me with metformin. and just last night, im awaken by stomach pains and it took me an hour in the bathroom. and after that i felt like vomitting. headaces is also another effect to me. and it was really bad. i stopped taking metformin and would go back to my gyne to ask for another prescriptn.

I took Metformin for Type II diabetes. The side effects you describe seem to be pretty standard for this drug, and I took myself off it for the same reasons. I also suffered some loss of bone density while taking it, and my research indicates the Metformin may have been the cause. Thank you for bringing attention to this dangerous "treatment."

Good lord! The risks of drugs nowadays outweigh the benefits by leaps and bounds. Why is it legal, in our medical profession, to treat a patient for one disease by producing the symptoms of another? Who comes up with this crap anyway?

Good article. I'm not familiar with this medication but I'll watch out for it if anyone tries to prescribe in the future.

I have been taking this for borderline diabetes. The doctor said I didn't need it but she recommended it. I have experienced some of these side effects- along with shaking if I don't eat because my blood sugar drops too low. I think I will stop taking it to see if things get better. Thanks for the great article!
