We all remember those colorful blocks of modeling clay from our childhood. Don't you recall making interesting sculptures and creations from those bricks of clay that mimic sticks of butter? Sure you do. Well, modeling clay isn't just for kids anymore. Here are five great reasons to play with clay.

Move It Or Lose It

We have all heard the saying "move it or lose it" and boy is this true. We know that letting our kids and grandchildren play with clay is great for improving fine-motor skills, but what about us adults? Many adults suffer from arthritis in their hands. This is especially true for seniors with aches and pains in their fingers.

Play with clay to keep your fingers nimble and moving. As you play, you will be stretching those muscles and exercising the joints, as well.

Just For Fun

With today's fast-paced society, it is difficult to slow down for a moment and truly enjoy yourself. Well, playing with clay can simply be fun. Keep some clay in your desk at work or in a convenient place at home.

Sculpt some funny looking animals or a silhouette of your boss. It doesn't matter what you make from the clay as long as you are having a good time.

Boost Creativity

As children, our imaginations run wild. We would frequently pretend to be animals, astronauts, or even monsters as children. Today, it is hard to think about being anything but responsible. Playing with clay can help your creativity flow.

If the humdrum life as an adult has you thinking inside the box, pull out a brick of modeling clay and work it between your fingers. It is amazing just how quickly you will find yourself dreaming up clay dragons or making tiny clay furniture. Who knows, maybe clay is where prototypes begin.

Problem Solving

Okay. When you first think of playing with clay, you don't probably think about problem-solving skills, that is, unless you are trying to figure out how to rip that plastic shrink wrap from the clay.

Great article. I love to crack open a jar of Play-Doh. Not only does it smell like my childhood, but it's so much fun.
