Explaining to a child that you are dating again after your spouse has died can be a bit difficult. Your child may wonder how you can be so accepting of their mother or father's death, when they probably experience a lot of pain on a day to day basis. Here, we'll take a much closer look at a few of the things that may make telling your child that you are dating again go a little bit smoother for you.

Reassure Your Child That You Still Miss Their Parent

One of the main reasons that your child is likely to be upset about you dating other people is because they will think that you don't miss their parent. For this reason, it's very important to reassure your child that you miss their parent. Let them know that you still think about your former spouse every day and no matter who you decide to date, nothing will ever change that. Although they still may be upset with you about dating someone other than their parent, it can really help things go a little bit smoother.

Explain That No One Can Replace Their Mommy or Daddy

For some children, there is a huge fear that you are trying to replace their mommy or daddy with your new girlfriend or boyfriend. It is important for you to let your child know that this isn't what you're trying to do. Explain to your child that their mommy or daddy was a very special person and that no one will ever be able to fill the void that they've left. At the same time, it's important for you to encourage your child to act respectful towards your new girlfriend or boyfriend.

Very good advice. As a widow of four years, I can attest to having had this conversation with my three boys. I had explained to them as you noted above, but I also added that I also needed to get out socially and see other adults, whether it meant dating or just making new friends. My youngest was the one I was worried the most about telling. He was only 12 at the time. But I just explained to him I was being upfront so he knew what was going on, and I did miss his dad, no one would ever replace him, but that I needed a social life. http://www.ajourneywelltaken.com

This WOULD be a tricky thing to discuss, wouldn't it? Your suggestions were so compassionate and empathetic, really relating to the feelings of the child as well as the needs of the parent who has decided to date again. Super job on this one, Jody!
