Hydrocodone is the most commonly prescribed opiate based painkiller in the United States. It works by blocking the pain receptors in the brain that tell you when you're in pain. In the United States, it is only commercially available with a doctors prescription, and only when combined with other medications, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and some antihistamines.

I personally have been prescribed hydrocodone-apap (Hydrocodone combined with acetaminophen) on several occasions, usually for toothaches. I am usually informed by a pharmacist when I pick up the prescription that this drug is addictive, and that I shouldn't take any other products containing acetaminophen, and that I should avoid drinking, driving, or operating heavy machinery.

For me, the side effects are few, but notable. Some people complain about becoming sleepy after taking it, but I am just the opposite. I am completely unable to sleep, and in fact I feel wide awake and alert. There is also a general euphoric feeling, without the fuzzy-headed effects of a lot of drugs. I can see why it is so addictive.

There was a period of about a month when I had severe dental problems which took some time to repair, and my dentist kept me supplied with hydrocodone for the entire time. During this time I noticed that I seemed to be building up a tolerance to the medication, and I had to take it more often to relieve my pain. I believe that I was starting to become addicted to it myself. Thankfully, the pain was over as soon as my dental work was complete, and I didn't suffer any withdrawal effects when I stopped taking it.

The most consistent and annoying side effect for me is the itch. My skin itched, everywhere, uncontrollably, every time I have taken hydrocodone.

There were two times when I became nauseous and vomited after taking this medication. Both times were after particularly messy tooth extractions, and both times, I had not eaten for some time prior to taking it. I also experienced constipation when taking it over longer periods of time.
