Lipitor Side Effects: My Rare-but-Serious Muscle-Related Side Effects

Judging by my doctor's look, the good cholesterol was good, but the bad cholesterol was starting to become a problem. OK, so I enjoy the occasional burger and fries, but by and large, I do not eat red meat and stick to veggie burgers and fish. Nonetheless, the genes have gotten the better of me, and diet is no longer going to cut it. Is it time for a statin drug?

Physicians have found that the use of statin drugs is useful in lowering cholesterol and thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Perhaps the most widely known statin - advertised on national television - is Lipitor which contains the synthetic substance known as atorvastatin.

As we discuss my using Lipitor, the doctor appears surprised that I am not begging on bended knee to try anything but that - leading me to wonder what heinous Lipitor side effects are well known but rarely discussed in polite company.

Lipitor side effects most commonly noticed are muscle cramps. Yet these cramps have a dark side, and when they devolve into myopathy the muscles may begin a gradual breakdown of the very fibers from which they are constructed. Some Lipitor side effects are actually positive, such as a lowered risk of nuclear cataract, and also a modicum of protection against lung cancer.

I have experienced the cramping of my lower leg muscles and at times this makes it hard to sit still and type or do anything for long periods of time, yet as these incidents are few and far between, they are easily dealt with. As to the positive Lipitor side effects, it is hard to prove a negative.

Physicians will closely monitor their patients not only to ascertain if the dosage of Lipitor is sufficient to lower the bad cholesterol to acceptable limits, but also to catch any of the more serious Lipitor side effects. These include fatigue, stomach pain, a jaundiced appearance, muscle weakness, and down the line the potential for kidney damage and also liver damage.

I have had a HUGE BITE from Mr Lipitor that has wrecked my life, I have tried to contact Pfizer directly and of coarse they will put you on hold, trans, or just call back when the right person is in to talk to. I can NOT, again NOT walk anymore due to lipitor, it has stold the muscles from my legs, been married for 32 years, we both thought when the girls are out of the house and we can live our lifes like we are kids, it will be so great, love my kids, but for years I raised them, and now my wife and I wanted to see the country, We spent evey dime due to this illness that Mr. Lipitor had so gladly left inside of me, it took both of my kidneys, I had more hoses into my body then you see at a gas station. Into my neck, both side, chest both sides, going to heart, lungs, any organ they could get to, because I was so full of Toxic poison it was killing me, I was in my bed for 4 days and didn't remember anything, never went to the bathroom, not one time. My ankles were 17" around, my legs

Concerned Reader, I think you are out of line. The article very clearly speaks of a personal experience and at no time do I claim to be an authority on the subject other than on my own, personal experience. I have even gone so far as to separate the facts from the personal account via italics.

Sorry, but this isn't just about you. When people arrive here because they're suffering muscle pain and wondering if Lipitor is the cause, they leave with the impression that their pain is nothing more serious than a 24-hr bug...And they should just learn to live with it. Do you realize how irresponsible this is and that someone could've already DIED from you presenting yourself as an authority on the subject, but not directing others to CALL THEIR DOCTOR with these side effects? Do you even know that Rhabdomyolysis is a degenerative muscle disease that usually ends in death, and it can be CAUSED by any statin, not just Baycol?

Thank you both for commenting. I appreciate your concern, Concerned Reader, and have taken steps to mitigate the side effects. Thank you for caring enough to leave a message or three.

Why would someone write that they have "serious muscle-related side effects", yet not consider that a clue that they should call their doctor right away as the drug company itself advises? The writer says that her course of action is "check the blood levels yearly and be prepared to stop Lipitor if kidney or liver values appear out of whack. Simple enough." By the time this writer realizes that she had kidney or liver damage, it might be from her autopsy...Simple enough.

"...and there are no adverse notations in yearly blood tests, I see no reason to discontinue using Lipitor." A trip to www.lipitor.com finds (from the drug company Pfizer itself): Serious Side Effects LIPITOR can cause serious side effects. These side effects have happened only to a small number of people. Your doctor can monitor you for them. These side effects usually go away if your dose is lowered or LIPITOR is stopped. These serious side effects include: Muscle problems. LIPITOR can cause serious muscle problems that can lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure. You have a higher chance for muscle problems if you are taking certain other medicines with LIPITOR. Liver problems. LIPITOR can cause liver problems. Your doctor may do blood tests to check your liver before you start taking LIPITOR, and while you take it. Call your doctor right away if you: Have muscle problems like weakness, tenderness, or pain that happen without a good reason, especially if y

This person is obviously NOT QUALIFIED to be giving ANY type of "advice" on whether or not ANYONE should or should not be taking Lipitor. While I'm not a physician, I realize how important it is to have direct and truthful consultations with your personal physician when considering whether or not to begin/continue ANY drug therapy, including Lipitor...Hiding "serious muscle-related side effects" from your physician is just foolish. IN FACT, the title of this piece of fantasy is "Lipitor Side Effects: My Rare-but-Serious Muscle-Related Side Effects". In it, she explains that after beginning Lipitor treatment (and I quote): "I have experienced the cramping of my lower leg muscles and at times this makes it hard to sit still and type or do anything for long periods of time, yet as these incidents are few and far between, they are easily dealt with." She goes on to end this "Lipitor review" with another quote: "As long as the positive outweighs the negative and there are n

Is there a chance that the muscle damage from lipitor, and or simvastatin, or any statin, will reverse itself, or is it a permanent condition? Thank you for any helpful information you can give me. flyboy@dundee.net
