"The troop surge" commenced Feb. 14, 2007, with the 82nd Airborne as the vanguard of an American troop buildup that would climb to 30,000 extra U.S. soldiers by the summer of 2007. U.S.-led forces have successfully tamped down violence, and the Pentagon has forged critical pacts with Sunni fighters against al-Qaeda in Iraq.

On January 23 2007, the president had this to say on the troop increase in Iraq, outlining the purpose in supporting the Iraqi government maintain control: "In order to make progress toward this goal, the Iraqi government must stop the sectarian violence in its capital. But the Iraqis are not yet ready to do this on their own. So we're deploying reinforcements of more than 20,000 additional soldiers and Marines to Iraq. The vast majority will go to Baghdad, where they will help Iraqi forces to clear and secure neighborhoods, and serve as advisers embedded in Iraqi Army units. With Iraqis in the lead, our forces will help secure the city by chasing down the terrorists, insurgents, and the roaming death squads. And in Anbar Province, where al Qaeda terrorists have gathered and local forces have begun showing a willingness to fight them, we're sending an additional 4,000 United States Marines, with orders to find the terrorists and clear them out."[1]

A diary and another document seized during U.S. raids in Iraq show some Al Qaeda leaders fear the terror group is crumbling, with many fighters defecting to American-backed neighborhood groups. The military revealed two documents discovered by American troops in November: a 39-page memo written by a mid- to high-level Al Qaeda official with knowledge of the group's operations in Iraq's western Anbar province, and a 16-page diary written by another group leader north of Baghdad.

Good article! It shows that you've done your homework! There's nothing more annoying to me than someone who just goes on their gut instinct when it comes to something like politics. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to more.

Solid writing and analysis. Thank you for helping me to understand things that on my own I tend to miss.

We must also ignore American foreign policy that was instituted in 1998 BEFORE Bush ran for office, and the American public law that passed the Senate unanimously. We must ignore the provisions of the Armistice Agreement of 1991 signed by Saddam, the 16 UNSC resolutions of the post Gulf War, and the (ultimatum) resolution 1441.

2Buzy, I am sorry for your loss...But if you believed Bush lied then you would have to believe Clinton lied, Al gore, lied, Hillary lied, Edwards, Biden, and all the other Democrats including Obama who claimed in 2004 he supported Bush's war effort & that's what prompted the "fairy tale" comment by Bill..If Bush lied we must refuse to do any research into the activities of the principals of the story prior to 9-11or the issues that actually led up to the war. WMDs were just ONE of a number of central issues (but to the left, they were the ONLY issue...the rest dissapeared like the WMDs.)

Yes, Got bless the troops but please don't assime we are safer here - we are not! And always remember that we are there ONLY because Bush lied to the American people. In fact, he did such a great job, 81% of americans asked believe we are there because of 911 and how pathetic is that? They have had been brainwashed (or just don't read) to the point they honestly belive that is why we are there! We are there simply because Jr. lied to lead an invasion to clean up the mess Sr. made and ended up making a bigger mess - killing thousands: including one from own family! There were NO WOMD and he knew it, but he lied so thousands could die. Don't ever forget that!

Great article. My oldest son served one tour of duty in Iraq and I never stopped worrying about him for the entire time he was there. I support our troops 100%.

You're right, Tony! First off, this is probably the best analysis piece I've read of yours so far. Second, although I disagree with the motives for going after Saddam (which I feel to this day was nothing but a vendetta between feuding families), I want our troops to kick ass and come home alive and in one piece. See, you can disagree with the policy that sent them there WITHOUT wishing for our military to be defeated (which is BEYOND ME why any American would want that!)

interesting article, tony. i definitely agree with you re: you have to watch out for the embers! and everyone should support our troops, no matter what the politics. :)
