I was online with my young friend Phil, the person helping me learn the ins-and-outs of making a blog, when he instant messaged me that his friend from East Moline, Illinois (our mutual home town) had just bolted from a classroom in Cole Hall on campus at Northern Illinois University, running for his life.

DeKalb, Illinois, where Northern Illinois University is located, is about an hour and a half drive to the east on Interstate 80. Many students from the Quad Cities attend NIU. I have taken workshops at NIU and my husband graduated from Northern Illinois University, a campus of about 25,000 students, many of them commuters.

The friend told Phil that his girlfriend was still inside the lecture hall at Cole Hall, in a geology class. She had been sitting right next to a student who was shot in the neck by a gunman, (some say black clad), who entered Cole Hall at approximately 3 p.m. (CDT) in this DeKalb, Illinois college town. The gunman was armed with a shotgun and 2 pistols, and, within 2 minutes or so, used that shotgun and those 2 pistols to shoot 22 students, six of them fatally, before taking his own life.

Said students Desiree Smith and Geoff Alberti, "I saw four people down on the ground. We were all crawling toward the exits in the back of the room on our stomachs." Desiree added that she saw the gunman shoot their instructor "in the arm."

Jim Donohue, who sustained about 20 buckshot wounds to his shoulder and the back of his head in the attack, said, "The gunman came out of the emergency exit on the right-hand side of the stage. My girl and I ran outside together. I consider myself fortunate. I feel horrible for others who weren't so fortunate. My dad and I had actually talked about what to do if something like this happened, after there were threats in December, and my dad said, 'Don't think. Just run.'"

Scary. Where I live gang violence was making a steady decline and ever since GWB took office it has slowly risen. I think we have had 9 murders in 27 days this year, most gang related. Bashing people seems to be socially acceptable among adults and children do learn what they live. The guy that did this was a cutter. Usually people who self injure do so because they are being abused in some way. They can not hurt the one that is hurting them, so they hurt themselves. I notice the papers did not name his prescription medicine. A lot of violent crime associated with them. I think one of them is Zoloft (spelling?) I do not think that sudden change in brain chemistry caused him to snap. It seems he had been planning it for some time.

What an experience. My sister recently retired from teaching. She was often assigned to the troubled kids classes and she felt she was getting too old to deal with it. I think we will keep seeing violence among our children, because we keep glorifying war to solve problems. If we had a more adult government, we might just raise a new breed of children. The guy that did this latest one was a cutter. People who self injure do so because they can not hurt the person who is hurting them. (usually kids with physically or sexually abusive parents or steps-foster). If parents are rigid and place unrealistic expectations on the child, they often become so frustrated (and angry) they self harm. Because of his interest in the correctional system and being placed in a mental rehab place, it seems he was getting back at someone. Too bad he did not explain why innocent students. Sad.

Such a horrible tragedy. And to think that the administration of the school where you worked, had no concern or compassion for you, when your life was threatened, is despicable. That woman should be dismissed who was "bullying" you with her pointed finger. To lose wonderful teachers (as yourself) is so needless. You deserve to be protected and defended against all such threats, and I am tired of all these privacy rules that proctect the offender, instead of the victim. God bless you, and thanks for your efforts as a teacher.

What a horrible tragedy that students are being gunned down in their classes. What is happening to our society? And to think that the administration (at your school) would not be concerned about what happened to you is despicable. You were just trying to do your job, and that woman who treated you so bad should be dismissed. I know you must have felt like you were in the Twilight Zone with such callousness. It's a shame to lose wonderful teachers needlessly. Wonderful reporting!

What a horrible experience! It's a shame that a high quality person like yourself was driven away by a bunch of jerks. I valued my teachers and can't imagine them experiencing something like this. Am glad the students helped out...but the administration (and that hideous woman) are way out of line. It might involve some work and some expense, but there certainly ARE proper measures for dealing with this type of thing.

The author probably wants to point out that, with 4 shooting in one week, this is a problem that has implications across the land. And ti does.
