Speed traps can be a pain in the rear but now njection.com has come out with a cool little device called mashup that combines Microsoft Live Maps and the ability to be able to see exactly where a speed trap is located anywhere on the planet.

How does this work? The information is put into a data base by its member and anyone can view it.

This could be the new thing for speed demons but also provide a potential hazard for those who enjoy staying out of view from the law. With racing cars and people driving way above the speed limit, someone is bound to get hurt.

Speed traps have been around for what seems like forever and on one occasion, I was driving down to Durant, Oklahoma when a highway patrol pulled me over. I had run through a speed trap and didn't even realize it until I see the flashing lights of the patrol car.

Even though I was only going seven miles over the speed limit and only received a warning, it was still an embarrassing moment for me.

The speed trap that is located just outside of Atoka got a lot of the town's people steered up and they wanted to put an end to the speed trap because they said it was unjustified. What some of the Atoka people did next really surprised me and created a lot of problems with the police officers.

Some of the guys from Atoka owned land that stretched a mile around the speed trap and because the land was private land and there are no laws against warning people of speed traps, they set up huge florescent signs that warned people of the speed trap.

The first sign said, speed trap ahead. The second sign said, you are getting closer to the speed trap. The third sign said, speed trap now. The fourth said, don't say I didn't warn you.

The speed trap signs had a lot of people laughing because you could see them from a mile away with their glowing colors. The police officers didn't find this funny and even went in front of the congress to get the signs taken down. In the end, the speed trap guys were able to leave two of their four signs up and the cops went on to set up speed traps at a different location.

If you are ever headed between Atoka, Oklahoma and Stringtown, Oklahoma, be sure to check out the signs and be careful of the speed traps.

I have no sympathy for speeders. They put everybody's life in danger. Go cops!

Technology often evolves in strange and new directions, doesn't it? Your anecdote about the speed trap signs was intriguing :)
