The Great White Shark, Carcharodon carcharias, has been feared and worshiped since man first laid eyes on this amazing creature. However, as we get to know this creature we are learning that the largest predatory fish in the world is more complex and intelligent than we first thought. This animal is not a mindless killing machine, but a curious and social being. If you are a shark lover and want to have an up close and personal experience with a Great White, then consider planning a Great White Shark Diving Experience.

Great White Sharks

Great White Sharks are awe inspiring because of their size and power. They can grow up to twenty feet in length and weight upwards of five thousand pounds. Yet, they are capable of stealthy movements through the coastal waters of the world designed to ambush their prey, seals, dolphins, whales, fish and other sharks. In addition to sight hunting, sharks also hunt using special senses like electrosence and mechanosence.

Great White Adventures

Great White Adventures was founded in 1998, and has completed over 400 Great White Shark adventures. They have a perfect safety record and offer two different destination adventures. The first adventure is to the Farallon Islands, which is located about 26 miles from the coast of San Francisco, California. This is a one day expedition that costs about $775 per person for a cage diving package and $375 per person for people who want to stay topside. This destination adventure operates daily between September and November. This is when the Great Whites come to the area to feed on Elephant Seals. Water visibility on this dive is about twenty feet and a decoy is use to attract sharks to the dive cages.

The second dive site visited by this tour company is Isla Guadalupe, which is located about 160 miles off the Baja, Mexico shore. Here you will have nearly 100 feet of visibility. This expedition is a five to seven day adventure that offers tours between July and October. The cost of this adventure starts at about $2,850.

Yeap, I've ofen considered doing the cage dive with the Great White. It sounds a lot more reasonable that, say, hiding behind an outcrop on a reef in Australian waters while one swim by you.
