As Catholics, we know it is one of the precepts of the faith to attend Mass on Sundays, on holy days of obligation, even daily if possible. But what should you do if you don't feel like you are getting anything out of it?

Here are seven tips to help you:

First of all: Don't give up. The Mass has been around for more than 2000 years, in spite of homilies delivered by less-than-inspiring priests, lackluster music and unruly children.

2. Pray for guidance. When you feel your attention slipping, simply pray, "Lord, help me." The Mass is the central celebration of the Church. Jesus wants you there. He will help you.

3. Pick a word to listen for in the liturgy. Listening for words such as, "Jesus," "thanks" or "holy", will help you focus on what is being said.

4. Offer the Mass up for someone. Before Mass starts, think of someone who needs God's help. Say, "Lord, I offer this Mass for _______________. Help me to make a worthy offering of myself for him/her."

5. If you find your mind drifting to all the things you need to do after Mass, offer that list to God. "Lord, I am preoccupied with _____________________. Help me to focus on You instead."

6. Focus on the words of consecration. Remember that when the priest says them, he is not acting as in a play. The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus really does come down from heaven and through time to really give us His flesh and blood in the bread and wine at each and every Mass. It's awesome when you think about it, isn't it?

7. Use a missal or a missalette (the booklet that has the words of the Mass). Bring one of your own if your church doesn't have them in the pews. One good one is Magnificat, a monthly magazine with all the prayers and readings. Following along in the missal allows us to experience the Mass through our eyes as well as our ears. The more senses we use, the better we absorb experiences. Following along in the missal also helps to distract us from what our neighbor is wearing or doing.

By following these techniques, you will certainly get more out of Holy Mass and truly take part in God's celebration. You will also be setting a good example for your loved ones.

See you at Mass!
