This week, President Bush signed the Congress-approved Economic Stimulus Package.

The deal is done - the checks will be coming.

What does that mean for you? Well, that depends.

In short, the 'rebate' is based on income. If you made less than $75,000 last year, you'll get $600. If you made more, you'll still get a check, but the amount goes down as income goes up.

If you're married, you'll get $600 each, and the income cap is $125,000.

If you've got kids, you'll get $300 more for each, with the same income restrictions, up to the maximum.

To answer a few common questions: No, you will not be taxed on this money next year. It is officially considered an 'advance' on 2008's taxes - so you might have to pay it back, but you won't get taxed on it.

You don't have to file any special paperwork to get it; it will be mailed sometime in May automatically. However, you do have to file a tax return (even if you technically don't have to). That's why it's on hold until May; the Treasury Department needs your taxes to figure your check amount.

So, really, the only question left is: what will you do with yours?

For those of you who are getting a check rather than using direct deposit, be patient: the checks will be mailed after the direct deposits are finished. According to the IRS, they will be mailing the paper checks starting in late May and running through June.

Got mine yesterday - there were no taxes taken out. For those of you with diminished deposits, I recomend you contact the IRS to find out what happened.

I'm with Webayt. If they're taxing the refund to you and then it means you get less next year, I don't really feel like I'm getting ahead here. $600 is not a helluva lot of money. When I heard the amount, I shrugged and continued doing what I was doing. I guess to some people $600 is a lot of money, but with a car note and student loans, this doesn't even make a dent. Oh well. I'll use the money to pay my car note and student loans, by the way.

I'm going on my first guilt free shopping spree in years -- all in the name of helping the economy, of course.

Daytona - Your payment arrangements for previous tax years should not affect or be affected by the stimulus program; everything is based off this year's taxes, and this isn't a "refund", so isn't subject to the same automatic withholding rules.

Stew, if you've double-checked your calculations, and think the IRS made an error, then you should get in touch with them right away. You can find out how to contact your local office at http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.html

That's a good reminder, Carly. As I mentioned in the article, the payouts are calculated from a sliding scale that is based on income - if you earned over $75,000 ($125,000 as a married couple), then you'll get less than the maximum. Also, if you got a 100% refund this year, you'll only get $300 per adult, not $600.

Well the concept of the $600 is quite appealing, the fact is that an individual may get UP TO $600 and for each child, one may get UP TO $300. The amounts are not set in stone and it's based off of income as well as factoring in the additional child tax credit. So now people are freaking out because they thought that they would get this set amount, and they are not.

What about those who are still paying off last years taxes? Do they get the rebate check? Have heard yes and no.

Your stimulus checks ARE TAXED BEFORE YOU GET IT! The first ones started today on direct deposit and a friend who got theirs. She got $1530 check out of $1800. They took out $270 in taxes.
