Some of the most decorative and practical outdoor planters aren't purchased from stores. The most unique and practical outdoor planters are made from ordinary items such as wine crates, and they're generally less inexpensive too. Many wine shops and vineyards are happy to give away wine crates to customers. If you want eye-catching unique outdoor planters, consider the following ideas for making wine crate planters. You'll save money and create wine crate planters that are completely unique and highly decorative. They'll look great on your porch, deck, or patio, and they'll become the focal point of your outdoor space no matter where you decide to place them.
Where to Find Empty Wine Crates
Wooden crates designed to hold bottles of wine make fantastic outdoor planters. Instead of buying expensive wooden planters from your local garden center, visit your local wine shop or wine vineyard. Ask if they have wine crates they'd be willing to sell, and more than likely they'll give them away. Wine crates don't have to be perfect to make fantastic outdoor planters.
Liners
After obtaining wine crates to make into planters, purchase plastic liners to hold in the soil and water. Don't worry if they don't fit perfectly. The gaps can be filled in after planting. As long as the liners fit inside, they'll work well for this unique project.
Outdoor Protection
You'll also need clear acrylic gloss or wood preservative. It must be placed on the inside as well as the outside of the wood to prevent it from turning dark and eventually rotting. I recommend using Thompson's Water Seal rather than spray gloss, but outdoor gloss can be used to seal the wood.
Drainage
After the wood crates have been treated and protected, place a three-inch layer of stones and several small holes in the bottom of the liners for proper drainage. This way the roots of the plants can drain, and the water to sustain the plants will never come in contact with the chemically treated wood.
