We got up early on Saturday mornings, ate our breakfast, and started to work. We washed dishes, swept, and mopped the floors. Then, we dusted and vacuumed. We didn't stop until all of our work was done. Then, we could turn on the television or play.
In the afternoons, on Saturday's, Mom took Granny to the grocery store. While they were at the grocery store, my sister and I got to go skating at the local Skating Rink. We loved to put the skates on and go around the rink. We thought that we were all grown up because, Mom would leave us to do the grocery shopping. Mom left my sister in charge to watch me. Those were the longest rides from Genola to Archdale. It seemed like we rode for miles to get to the nearest store. It was 15 miles to the closest Food Lion. Mom and Granny talked all the way to and from the store.
One Saturday, while we were working outside, we found a blake snake. My brother shot the snake out of the tree and we chopped the snake up. We mowed the yard that afternoon. We cleaned up some old trash, out of the yard. We burnt the snake in an old rusted barrel. I dreamed about snakes all night.
When night came my sister and I took our baths. After taking our baths, Mom curled our hair with wire curlers. We tossed and turned in them all night, so that we could have curls on Sunday morning. Mom loved to watch Lawrence Whelk on television.
We went to Grandma's after church. She lived close to the church. We were very close to the Pastor and his family. There were times that we went to their house and heard music. They recorded music for a daily Radio program. They had a piano and their two girls would sing with their Mother, as she played. At Grandma's we went to the pond to fish or sat on the cement porch. Grandma always offered everyone something to eat.
