Chris Berman, the popular ESPN sports announcer was caught on film cussing the television crew because they were moving about while he was broadcasting. The epithets he threw about were certainly rated "X", but might be typical in a high stress workplace. What is funny about the video is that it once again demonstrates that someone is always watching and if you resort to a tirade because you are upset about some aspect of your job, expect that it will be remembered and very well might be recorded. One has to believe Chris Berman wished he had not been so graphic in his comments. It also vividly points out that resorting to the use of vulgar vernacular is not limited to the street. One has to wonder if using more acceptable language might have cured the problem just as effectively. So here we have yet another example of a television personality that resorted to gutter language to make a point. Does his use of crude speech speak to the stage crew that was moving about or does it explain more about what is really happening in Chris Berman's head? This tirade was recorded in 2000 and ESPN has already responded that it is not typical and is almost a decade old so it is not representative of the real Chris Berman.
Does one think Chris Berman has had an epiphany since that episode? Could one really believe that it has never happened again? Whoever released the YouTube video remains unknown, but one would have to believe he had a present-day gripe. Could Chris Berman have a different persona than that which is reflected on television? Many more questions are created than answered by this tape.
ESPN did take action and had the YouTube video removed, but it is still available on the Internet.
The lesson of this tape concerning Chris Berman is the same as for the thousands of others that circulate about the Internet. Chose your words carefully when speaking to or about others. See the resources section for a link to the tape.
