It's not an easy task to pick the top ten songs by Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd has sold well over 200 million albums, cds, etc., so picking the top ten songs by this group is very subjective. Yet after lots of deliberation, I'm listing my top ten songs by Pink Floyd.
I'm listing my favorite songs of this group in three categories (Wordy, Haunting, and Primarily Instrumental). The corresponding numbers don't reflect the order in which I like them, as these top ten tunes of mine make up the cream rising to the top:

The First Part of The Top Ten: My 3 Favorite Wordy Pink Floyd Songs

1. Sheep, originally from 1977's Animals album

This tune begins with such tranquilly, with the sound of sheep baa-ing in a meadow, but then all the sudden it becomes a frantic manic rage about the exploitation of the human masses that even parodies the 23rd Psalm of the Holy Bible.

2. Take It Back, originally from 1994's The Division Bell album

Pink Floyd isn't exactly in the top ten love song business, so this very fast paced and deeply emotional take about a long-suffering romantic partner stands out for me. Some believe this work is about man's cruelty to the environment. The lyrics…

"And I push her to the limit to see if she will break
She might take it back, she could take it back someday"

…could certainly mean Mother Earth's answer to man's terrible stewardship of the environment.

3. Yet Another Movie, originally from 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason album

Whenever I listen to this tune, I always think about all the worthless movies that get made and are released every year. Ironically, sound bytes from a wonderful film called Casablanca are used in the song.

The Middle Part of The Top Ten: My 4 Favorite Haunting Pink Floyd Songs

1. The Fletcher Memorial Home, originally from 1983's The Final Cut album

Takeaways
  • Pink Floyd has sold over 200 million albums, cds, 8-track tapes, etc.
  • Pink Floyd's One of These Days includes an ominous threat within it.
  • Pink Floyd has used a lot of background diversions in their music.
Did You Know?
The "Fletcher" in The Fletcher Memorial Home song honors Roger Waters' father Eric Fletcher Waters, who was killed at Anzio in World War II.

i'm not trying to come down on anybody... i love the floyd and i love anybody who loves them as well, so we're all family, and we can all disagree respectfully. people's personal favorites are all going to be different and, well, personal... and a list of their 'best' songs would likely be even more difficult to agree on. whatever, you guys are cool...

Ryan...well, why didn't you make your own Pink Floyd listing if you like the songs that are more obscure to the public? I've listened to a lot of their albums, pretty much all, not just Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell...but we're only allowed to pick ten songs...I don't like their really early stuff as much, but some of Atom Heart selections and Obscured by Clouds' selections is also all right for me, but ten songs is all we can list--Roy Barnes

You're right, we all have our own opinions and this special offer was meant to garner this kind of reaction. I do enjoy many of the songs played on the radio and there are reasons why they were chosen to be released and played on the radio. I own close to twenty of Floyd's albums and so I am familiar with much more than the more commercialized songs. I just happen to feel strongly about the songs I chose, as you do about yours.

all the stuff they play on the radio has been overplayed to death. listen to 'obscured by clouds'... it's got some incredibly great overlooked songs. 'wots uh... the deal' is one of my all time favorites. and on 'atom heart...', 'if' and 'summer 68' are both great. 'fearless' off of 'echoes' is awesome, (and they never played it live. why?)

I heartily disagree. I chose to write about Pink FLoyd as well and I believe we only share one song on the list.

are you for real with this list? you have so much 'momentary lapse' and 'division bell' stuff on this list it's a joke. best 'wordy' songs, and you only have one song on there by waters who is one of the best if not the best lyric writer in the music world ever? you need to buy some more floyd albums and put the post-waters stuff aside for awhile.

I love Pink Floyd. I was blown away when my son's band, www.theMysteryTramps.com let fly with their rendition of Pink's Breathe. Pink is in my day, now, and forever a staple of teen angst, excitement and brings adults right back to their glory days of summer. Thanks for the memories, Roy.

They are my all time favorite group, and Roger Waters will be here in Pittsburgh in a few days. You are right about it not being easy to pick their top 10 since I love most of their songs. I do a lot of writing to Comfortably Numb, but I like Brain Damage, Young Lust, Hey You, and of course The Wall. Their documentary was really quite strange, but it allowed you to see inside of a troubled, creative mind. It was simply a masterpiece. Thanks for sharing the remaining tidbits about them that I was unware of.
