Industrial Style Platform Bed: Vintage Coke Crate Platform Bed
Embed:
You can use vintage Coke crates (and vintage Pepsi Crates) to create your own DIY platform bed. I love collecting vintage Coke crates and am always on the hunt for uses for them and neat ways to display them. When using vintage Coke crates to make this platform bed from scratch I recommend using Coke crates that are in great shape. If they need any repairs, make sure you do this before assembling the platform bed.
To Make a Vintage Coke Crate Platform Bed You Will Need:
Coke Crates (Wood)
Screws
Power Drill
Sheet of MDF or Plywood
Paint (optional)
Castors (optional)
L Brackets
To get started you need to build a support base for the middle of the platform bed. You do not want all the pressure on the vintage Coke crates, especially if you plan on moving this platform bed at any time.
Now, to build the base you first want to cut out a sheet of MDF to the same width and length as the bed.
Now, on to the support system. Measure how wide the coke crates are. This is at the short side. Add on 2 inches to this number.
Now, mark this width on the sheet of MDF on all sides. You can simply draw a in around the top of the MDF. Measure the rectangle you drew on the MDF. This is the size you need to build the support system from below on the vintage coke crate bed.
Now, on to the next step. Go ahead and stack some vintage wood coke crates up to the height you want your platform bed off the floor. About 4 are the perfect height.
Now, measure how tall this is.
Now, cut four strips of MDF, each as long as one side of the rectangle you drew and the same height as the stack of Coke crates.
Assemble the four sides together to form an open rectangle using L brackets. You want to pre drill the holes and use at least 2 L brackets on the top and bottom of each portion of the open support rectangle.
Now, this next step is option, but great idea if you want your Vintage Coke crate platform bed to be all one piece.
Take your stacks of Coke crates and use screws to attach them together into stacks.
Place the MDF support base where you want your bed to be. Surround it with the stacks of vintage wood coke crates. Use screws and your drill bit to attach these together.
