Can a person be too old to begin an exercise program? The answer is a resounding "NO"! It doesn't matter what your age or condition may be, anyone can benefit from regular physical activity. I hope this article will help motivate you to assess and address your current fitness level. Active, healthy people become so by addressing their ability or inability to live by their personal standard of lifestyle and activity satisfaction. If you are inactive, you may want to become better able to do many of the things you used to do. When was the last time you remember enjoying an activity of your younger years? Do you now think you are "too old" to enjoy a healthier, more active, lifestyle? Let's start our new journey by exploring benefits of a better active lifestyle. Staying active can help you to stay independent, have more energy for the things you enjoy, improve your balance, prevent or delay diseases such as cancer, heart disease, & diabetes, and help keep your mood elevated! You don't need to join a gym or buy special equipment to add more activity to your life. All you have to do is find things you like to do, and make them a part of your everyday routine. This could be brisk walks, bike rides, dancing, swimming, yard work, or anything you find enjoyable.
In order to get the most out of physical activity, there are four components you'll need to include. These are endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Can you complete or benefit from any of the following components:
Endurance: Get at least 30 minutes of an activity that makes you breath hard on most or all days of the week. This helps to build your energy. You don't have to do 30 minutes all together; you can break it down into 10 minute segment.
Strength: This can be improved with activities that involve you lifting or moving an item slightly heavier than you're used to. Keeping your muscles in shape can help you prevent falls and keep you mobile and independent longer.
Balance: Try standing on one foot, then the other. If you are able to do this, try to not hold on to anything for support. Anything that makes your body work to keep itself upright will help improve your balance.
