In 1860, Martin R. Delaney wrote an article on the denied civil rights of African-Americans. During this time, there were actually two presidents in America because of the split between the Union and the Confederacy. Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, was the 16th president of the United States of America. In addition, Jefferson Davis was also the president of the Confederate States of America. Out of 4 million Africans in America, 3 million of them were salves. Ninety-four percent of them lived in the south of course. By 1960, Martin Luther King, Jr. was preaching the same rhetoric of denied civil rights to African-Americans in America. At this time, the 35th president was a democrat by the name of John F. Kennedy. In that span of 100 years, from 1860 to 1960, 19 different presidents took the oval office. Thirteen of them were republican and six of them were democrat. No matter how you look at it, change sure does take a long time to trickle down into society. Either neither party could control the denied civil rights of African-Americans because America was really powered by some anonymous machine; or both party's' were in on it together.

"Politicians are like snake charmers working you with their sweet serenade." What an awesome centerpoint for your absolutely superb column! I enjoyed your critical look at both sides of the aisle. Very well reasoned points, and wanted to say thanks for another great read! KIM
