With the internet breaking communication barriers everywhere, the world has become an abundance of information. For those that are home-schooling their children, this is very exciting because information is so accessible. Children are receptive to knowledge like a sponge to water, so it is simply fascinating to see them soak in all that they can. Moms that are taking the time to home-school their children are obviously committed to passing on teachings that are valued by them personally. With everything to be learned, we sometimes forget to talk and relax with our children. A mom who doubles as a teacher needs to leave the teacher role behind and simply become mom for at least a few hours everyday.

Wonderfully, you have the opportunity to spend a lot of time with your child, but be sure you are listening to your child. Do not just hear the words, but notice the emotion too. Many children find it difficult to express exactly what they want. Talk to your child about 'stuff' unrelated to school and allow him to just be a kid. It is not all about business at this point. You are covering two roles as a home-school Mom. When you participate in conversations and show you are really listening and are emotionally involved, the child's confidence soars. Children notice when you are "unavailable" to them. Being present to the discussion at hand is an easy way to assure your child that they are important to you.

Some parents interrupt their children when they are talking. As adults, we dislike being interrupted, but kids many times will keep quiet when that is our request. It is important for a child to feel safe in expressing his views. Effective communication is an important skill for a child to learn, so don't forget the important influence you have on your child.

There is a gentle balance to be obtained as a Mom and a home-schooling parent. The challenge is gratifying because you are such a significant role model for your child.
