The Apple Diet

What is It? Does it Work?

The beginning of fall always brings to mind apples: apple cider, apple butter, picking your own apples at an orchard. I enjoy eating a nice, crisp apple; when I was pregnant, I ate an apple with a peanut butter sandwich almost every day for lunch. So when I heard about an apple diet, I
 was intrigued.

What is an apple diet? One diet is a de-toxing diet that involves eating only apples for several days. That wasn’t what I had in mind. But, the “three a day apple diet” bases its premise on the recommendation that we eat 5 servings of fruit and vegetables per day. Since a medium to large apple is more than one serving, a person eating three apples a day would have their 5 servings of recommended fruit per day.

What benefit does this apple diet have? Eating fresh apples is good for you. The old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” did have some truth in it. A diet that contains a steady supply of fresh fruit that includes fiber and vitamin C can’t help but be good for you.

The apple diet is simple. Simply eat three apples a day, one before each meal. A medium size apple contains approximately 5 grams of fiber, or 20% of the recommended daily intake of fiber. In fact, an apple contains both kinds of fiber said to be most beneficial: soluble and insoluble. The pectin, or soluble part of an apple, also has the added benefit of preventing cholesterol buildup in the arteries. The insoluble fiber is what creates bulk in the colon, and helps to move food through the digestive tract quickly and easily.

i have been a huge apple eater since i was little...i go through a 5kg bag in two days...what i found was that they helped with my digestion...and they do make you feel full...but they are quick to digest so i would feel hungry but they probably do stop me from over eating at meal times...i also found you gain alot of liquid from eating them aswell and i enjoy eating them more in the summer...perhaps as a form of rehydration or possibly because they are in season as well...but for me they seem to replenish my system...but any fruit such as oranges also do... as long as people eat healthy foods even mixing in small amounts of unhealthy foods along with regular exercise they will remain in a healthy weight range... but i believe key factors with any diets is mainly due to execerise...

DEAR MARSHA, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT INDIVIDUALS CONSUME 5 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES A DAY. HOWEVER YOU SEEM TO BE MISINFORMING INDIVIDUALS BY STATING THIS CAN BE IN THE FORM OF 5 OF THE SAME FRUIT A DAY. THE FACT IS THAT THESE FRUITS OR VEGETABLES SHOULD BE DIFFERENT AS THIS WILL PROVIDE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FIBRE, VITAMINS AND MINERALS NEEDED FOR THE DAY... THAT'S WERE THE RECOMMENDATION COMES FROM. IN REALITY 5 SERVINGS OF APPLES IS STILL CONSIDERED AS ONE PORTION (your doctor will tell you the same) OF THE DAILY RECOMMENDED AMOUNT OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES (BY THE WAY SAME APPLIES TO SMOOTHIES. IN FUTURE PLEASE POST ACCURATE INFORMATION.

This article appeals to me because I consume NO FRUITS and my diet is grossly lacking in a rich fruit or fiber source. For someone like me this is a good way to instill the habit of fresh fruit in the diet and provide bulk, fiber, and natural vitamins prior to sitting down to a meal. I can see where this would be a safe, and practical method to curb the appetite and get fruit into your diet at the same time. This method could be easily tweaked to get a balanced level of fruit. Instead of apples all three times, why not substitute a variety of fresh fruit prior to each meal? An apple this morning, a grape fruit prior to lunch, and strawberries prior to supper? Same effect, no fad, just simple dietary logic. I enjoyed the article, it was thoughtful, and gave me some ideas for simply modifying my diet. A little change beats NO CHANGE in my mind. Thanks Marsha! Off to eat an apple ***grin***

While there is some truth to this article, it has all of the key indicators of a fad diet. The important factor of any healthy diet is variety. Eating all of your fruit and vegetable servings from only apples (or any one food item)may prevent you from receiving important nutrients that are found in other foods. A variety of foods helps to ensure that all of the nutrients are provided and that boredom does not set in and the diet does not get abandoned.
