True to my usual practice of listening for either applause or boos, during Thursday night's Democratic debate on CNN televised from Austin, Texas, from on campus at the University of Texas, the only "boo-ing" was directed Hillary Clinton's way, as she took after Barack Obama for (purportedly) plagiarizing a speech by Deval Patrick, the National Co-Chairman of his campaign (and Governor of Massachusetts). Hillary's sharp retort that using Patrick's words is "Not change we can believe in; change we can Xerox" did not go over well with the crowd. This was the only instance of "boo-ing" in the extremely civilized 19th debate the two leading candidates have had.

First, from a woman's perspective, what was up with Hillary's outfit? The neckline of the black outfit reminded me of a costume from an old Star Trek set. It had a high collar that was edged in gold, which then looked as though it connected physically to her gold omega chain. It was not an unattractive look; it just looked like an early sketch of something Michael Jackson would design, with epaulets still to be attached. To be fair, it was fairly slimming and fetching from the waist up--- until Hillary stood up. The hemline of the jacket then ballooned unfetchingly, making her look larger through the hips than she actually is (surely not the desired effect?).

Fashion aside, here were some of the "zingers" heard during the largely friendly debate, listed in chronological order:

Obama: "What's lacking now are not good ideas. Washington is a place where ideas go to die."

Obama: "What the American people want is an America as good as its promise."

Obama: (on talking to Cuba's new leadership): "I do think it's important (for a nation) not just to talk to its friends, but also to talk to its enemies." (The gizmo people liked this one.)

Yep...there are typos in my last comment. I can't type properly due to two broken wrists....but at least I'm having a go

Great coverage! I think that Hillary is imploding and she may soon become irrelevent.

Excellent, educational read--brings the debate home to those of us who missed it. Thanks! (I'm not big on politics but I had wanted to catch this debate.)

(continued) I ever made was on Mitt Romney suddenly beginning to wear sweaters at every rally appearance in Iowa, despite the fact that it had to have been 88 degrees in the room he was appearing in. So, score one comment for the men (Romney, in this case) and one for the women (Hillary). (And, as a correction on the first of this continued response, I meant white "SHIRT" not tie.) But you already knew that.

(continued) a white tie and a suit of a boring color (black, gray, brown, pin-striped, etc.). Men's "fashions" exist, yes, but they just don't attract the attention or rise to the colorfulness of women's gowns...at least not in my experience. There are a few notable exceptions to this rule (Johnny Depp and David Arquette) come to mind, but, if the man has access to any suit, white shirt and tie, he will come off looking "dressed up", while putting a woman's outfit together that is suitable for taking the stage in a debate is a lot more complicated. There are necklines, hemlines, accessories, colors, trim, etc. While black was not a bad choice, almost everything else about the black-and-gold Martian Star Trek suit coat (with pants, of course) that Hillary selected struck me as (a) worthy of note (while Obama was just his usual well-dressed self, like every other male candidate this season). In my defense, lest I be accused of sexism, one can go back and find that the only OTHER comment

I understand your point, Carole, but...honestly...her outfit came very close to a Martian costume, for me. As the mother of a son and a daughter, I think those of us who have "mothered" both realize and remember how much more colorful and interesting it always was to dress the little girls than to pick clothes for the little boys. Even when big events like the Oscars loom, it is the women's gowns that are commented on, while comments on the men's attire...while there are some...are rather anemic. It isn't being "unfair." It's just that (unlike every other animal species on the planet), in general men's clothing is not as interesting, sartorially-speaking, as women's. I know that I watch the Oscars for the WOMEN's gowns, not the men's boring tuxedos. It's not fair, true, but it's the way it always has been, and, to a certain extent, it's the way I think it will continue to be unless there is some major change in the fact that a man is considered "well dressed' as long as he has on a whi

Connie, excellent job. Well written, with personal interjections. I missed the debate, but your article gave a great overview, great quotes, and made me feel like I was there. Looks like you hit a few nerves, but I believe you can't excell, nor can we excell unless we examine tough questions and issues. Good job.

Very interesting though I must object to the one sided clothing discussion - if what she wears is worthy of discussion, assuming it is not utterly outlandish like a martian costume, then what he wears is also. Were his shoes polished, his tie lying flat?

Did not watch the debate did not want to install a CNN plug in. I saw a few clips at You Tube and read a bit about it. Think you did a great job of it. I was watching one earlier scrolled up so I did not have to see Clinton's face and did notice the gold necklace and black suit. But since I did not see her in it or stand up image; no comment. Now let's talk about Michelle's outfits...I do like her pinstripe pantsuit she is wearing in today's pictures. Do like Obama's black coat worn when standing outside in the snow and cold to address overflow crowd in one of those north states recently. The best moment I saw from the debate was Obama speeching about Hillary's "Get Real" comment and dissing his supporters. Does she realize she is insulting citizens she wants to preside over in addition to many esteemed (okay and some not so esteemed) elected officials? She was furiously writing with that smug smirk on her face and suddenly stopped to look at him and laugh. Obama has that stand up comi

I distantly heard Obama/Edwards/Clinton discuss this in another early debate. Obama said to their criticism of his plan is he will not force (or mandate) but gives choice because "people may be happy with the carrier they have now). It seems to me that means both Edwards and Clinton's plans mean to monopolize health insurance with one choice a federal program. She says hers will be run by an outside agent not the government. Who are they? Her lobbyist friends? From what I heard Senator Kennedy say he gets to check off a box if he wants to buy Federal Health Insurance and I take it that is what Obama's plan is~to provide people with a similar carrier as a cheaper alternative to mainstream carriers. Deductibles and "does not cover" anyone? Health care was not my big issue so I did not read the plans set forth on websites. On Obama's was not considering Hillary so do not know if she has one to read.

That is why I do not like debates. Talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words. Or should. Hillary had to have the debate so she could put on her make up and play her part with her memorized lines. Anyone remember her vote helped cripple those vets? Anyone check Obama's work on behalf of Vets~especially the homeless Iraqi ones? Anyone speak about why she voted yes to the Iran Resolution? The possibility of bringing back the draft if she, the Republicans take us into Iran even as many are clamoring for out of Iraq? Hillary has no health care plan she has a health insurance plan. I got a sneak preview of the premiums from a card passed out in Mass. Seems more another expensive bill for people who's budgets are strained to the breaking point already. And what's up with this garnishing wages if we do not buy her insurance?
