Tackiest Moments at the Oscars
The yearly Academy Awards ceremony is supposed to be the premier night for all of Hollywood, as they show off their designer gowns and jewelry, pose on the red carpet, enjoy expensive goodie bags and wait to see who among them has been deemed worthy to obtain the ultimate prize.
Not all of the Oscars' moments have been golden, however. Some have been ironic, some aggravating, some funny and others totally
outrageous..
Here are a few examples:
In the Back, In the Corner, In the Dark- 1939
Although African-American actress Hattie McDaniel made movie history by being honored with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1939 for her portrayal of Mammy in Gone With the Wind, her peers apparently didn't seem to think that she deserved the privilege of sitting with them and McDaniel was relegated to sitting in the back of the ballroom, which was racially segregated at the time.
Brando's Diss- 1973
Yes, we all know that Marlon Brando was a serious political activist, but the Hollywood community was not feelin' the love when the legendary actor not only turned down his 1974 Best Actor Award for his role in The Godfather, but caused us to be subjected by a tedious, confusing speech by one Sacheen Littlefeather. Outfitted in traditional Native-American dress, Littlefeather read a rambling statement, saying that Brando's refusal to accept his award was based upon the negative way Native-Americans were treated by Hollywood. Ironically, Ms. Littlefeather (real name "Maria Cruz") later ditched her fetching costume to pose for a Playboy layout.
Naked Retreat- 1974
There's nothing better to add a spark to a long-winded Oscars ceremony than a buck-naked man running across the stage. In 1974, just as actor David Niven was about to make an introduction, a man- evidently seeking the world's attention- "streaked" behind the British star onstage. Even more memorable was Niven's witty response: "Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?"
Nessa's Rant- 1977
